ODESSA — Forsan's Lady Buffs won't be returning to Austin for a shot at a third straight state softball championship but it won't be from a lack of effort.
After falling to Alpine 14-1 Friday, the Lady Buffs rallied to tie the best-of-three quarterfinal series with a 7-5 win.
“I thought they showed a lot of character and a lot of fortitude,” Coach Shanna Taylor said of her young Forsan team. “We hit three home runs in that game and we put them (Alpine) on the run.”
Crossroads area athletes fared well in University Interscholastic League state competition over the weekend.

Teammate Desiree Anderson placed second in the event for a silver medal. She soared 18-3 1/2. Tuitt also finished fourth in the 200 meters (24.84) and eighth in the triple jump (35-03). Anderson was ninth in the 100 meters (12.38).
Big Spring High School’s Bridgette Tuitt and Desiree Anderson placed 1-2 in the Class 3A long jump Friday at the University Interscholastic League State Track Meet.
Classmate Mike Menefield took second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
A more detailed report will be upcoming in the Herald. The state meet was to conclude Saturday.
A list of results involving local and area athletes follows.
3A LONG JUMP:
ODESSA — Forsan’s Lady Buffs ran into a buzzsaw here Friday and fell to Alpine 14-1 in Game 1 of its quarterfilal playoff series.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series was scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the same location. Game 3, if necessary, was to follow 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
The series was being played at Odessa High School Field near Ratliff Stadium.
LUBBOCK — Coach Jason Phillips was disappointed his Buffaloes weren’t moving on the playoffs after Friday’s 6-2 loss to Bushland but he certainly wasn’t disappointed in his players.
“We played two solid games against last year’s state finalist. Bushland is a great 2A baseball team and our guys went out and proved that we could play with them,” Coach Phillips said. “It’s disappointing to lose, but we had a great year. I’m proud of our guys.”
LUBBOCK — If Forsan's Buffaloes are going to advance in the Class 2A state baseball playoffs they'll have to do it the hard way — winning two games today at Lubbock Cooper's Pirate Field against a formidable Bushland High School squad.
LUBBOCK — Howard College's Hawks managed to survive marathon games and a torrid pace through the loser's bracket to place themselves in position for a trip to nationals during the Region V Baseball Tournament here, but in the end, it may have been fatigue that sent them home Thursday.
It wasn't all fatigue, of course. A scrappy, highly-touted Grayson County College ballclub had more than a little to do with it.
Forsan's Lady Buffs take on Alpine in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Odessa High Field near Ratliff Stadium.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is schedule for 1 p.m. Saturday at the same location. Game 3, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
Winner of the series will advance to the regional semifinals.
Meanwhile, Forsan's boys go up against Bushland in a best-of-three baseball area game at 7 p.m. tonight at Lubbock Cooper. Game 2 of that series is set for noon Friday with a third game set 30 minutes after, if necessary.
