The Coahoma Bulldogs, including Ruiz, had 12 players earn honors.

Justin Coker nabbed second team fullback and Sheigh Cravens was second team receiver. Jacob Echavarria made the second team as an offensive lineman.

Forsan boys, girls beat Coahoma in rivalry games

December 18, 2010

Coahoma-Forsan boys
FORSAN — A big third quarter and a little bit too much speed was Coahoma’s undoing as Forsan got a big 47-39 win in District 3-2A play over the Bulldogs Friday in Forsan.

The story for the Bulldogs was the way they came out in the second half.

It was tied at 14 heading into the third quarter, but the game got away from Coahoma a little bit. CHS head coach Kim Nichols said his players couldn’t keep up in transition in the third and most notably, Forsan’s Ty Johnson was tough to slow down.

Steers cruise past Merkel

December 18, 2010

Merkel was going toe-to-toe with Big Spring heading into the second quarter, but in a flash, it looked like that never happened.

A strong second-quarter run propelled Big Spring past Merkel Friday 70-43 in the Steers’ first home game in almost a month.

Luke Adams led with 19 points, but Tristian Clay and Marc Segundo were as impressive with 14 and 10, respectively.

Guards make dangerous backcourt for BSHS

December 17, 2010

The inside game with Cerbi Ritchey and Diamond Mayes is almost unstoppable and the same could be said for Valerie Ross and Mackenzie

Stone’s shooting efficiency.
If that’s sounds like a double-edged sword opponents want no part of, how much more dangerous are the Big Spring Lady Steers with speed in the backcourt?

The answer: very dangerous. At least that’s what head coach Mike Warren is counting on with LaShaunte Anderson, Bridgette Tuitt and Logan Yarbar.

Round 1: Bulldogs, Buffs do battle in Forsan

Coahoma-Forsan girls
Coahoma head coach Mitzi Bell can remember how big the Forsan game was when she was in high school at Iraan. Forsan head coach Robert Hillger can remember close games decided by buzzer beaters between the two teams.

Both coaches know the Coahoma-Forsan game at 6 p.m. today in Forsan means something to the players, considering the close proximity between the two towns and the familiarity the players have with one another.
These two teams being the same district this year makes things even more exciting.

Defense focus for Thompson as Steers continue trek

December 16, 2010

The Big Spring Steers don’t play horrible defense. In some cases, they’re far from it.

But to first-year head coach Cliff Thompson, they can never be too good on the defensive side of the ball.

That’s one focus — among many — for the Steers as their third home game this season approaches. Thompson said the focus is starting to shift toward what the Steers have to do to get ready for District 5-3A play in January and at the top of his list is defense.

Bulldogs reveling in Acosta, Castilaw honors

December 15, 2010

COAHOMA — As Pete Acosta was trying to recall how many people have congratulated him on his selection to the 2010 Class 2A All-State Football team, another bystander shouted his name from afar, hoping to do the same.

Safe to say Coahoma is proud of what the senior has done.

Acosta was named second team all-state by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors with three other defensive backs. He wasn’t the only Bulldog on the list, either. Josh Castilaw earned honorable mention as an offensive lineman.

Big Spring girls beat Monahans, BSHS boys cruise past Lake View

December 15, 2010

The Big Spring Lady Steers took care of business at home once again this season Tuesday. This time they cruised past Monahans 56-34 in Steer Gym for their 11th win of the season.

Like most games recently, this game was all about experimenting with different lineups and getting every player on the floor.

“We started a different lineup, had an all junior lineup just to kind of look at that group and I thought they kind of got in there and got after it,” head coach Mike Warren said. “Although, the score was close

Bulldogettes stave off Post in thriller, 46-45

December 15, 2010

COAHOMA — In a game like this, a nine-point deficit looked like it was too far out of reach for the Coahoma Bulldogettes heading into the fourth quarter.

But they didn’t want to go 0-2 in district play. The fear of that happening alone sparked Coahoma in a thrilling 46-45 win over Post in District 3-2A action Tuesday in Coahoma.

The Bulldogettes were down 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie it thanks to a few baskets from Minnie Goodblanket and a clutch shot from Haley Pace with about a minute left in the game.
