Twice as nice: Garden City wins back-to-back titles

December 12, 2010

GARDEN CITY – At the beginning of the 2010 season, Ian Schaefer wasn’t quite sure the Garden City Bearkats would end up hoisting the UIL Six-Man Division I state championship trophy again.

At the very least, he didn’t want to make a bold prediction. But the more this team came together, got better every week and stayed focused, the more Schaefer knew the Bearkats were on to something special.

Players cherish Jones’ impact on Garden City

December 12, 2010

GARDEN CITY — Garden City football players talk about head coach Vance Jones like he’s a family member.

It’s just one way of putting his impact on the program in perspective.
“Coach Jones is like a second dad almost,” running back Josh Colunga said. “He’s been there for us on and off the field. He’s a great coach. He knows what he’s doing. He takes care of us a lot. I’m glad I did it under his judgement and his coaching staff. The rest of the coaches are awesome and I just want to say thank you to all of them.”

Garden City-Throckmorton clash in state title game

December 10, 2010

GARDEN CITY — Garden City head coach Vance Jones remembers the last time his Bearkats lost vividly.

It was to Throckmorton in the beginning of the 2009 season and Jones remembers his players naturally being upset.

More good than harm came from that loss, though.

“That loss was probably our motivation to work harder to get to play them again,” Jones said. “After the game, they said ‘Coach, we can beat them.’ They worked hard and that was the driving engine that helped us get to that point and once we beat them, we said ‘Hey, maybe we have a shot to go all the way.”

Leading the charge: Adams’ strong start driving force for Steers this season

December 9, 2010

Big Spring guard Luke Adams wasn’t fully aware how big his performance against Odessa Permian was on Nov. 19. Forty-two points was far from where he thought he finished.

“I really didn’t,” the senior said. “That’s the crazy thing about it. I didn’t even know how many. I probably thought I had 20, maybe 25.
“I guess when you’re playing to win, you don’t really care about points. You just care what’s on that scoreboard.”

Maybe it’s that mindset that has opponents taking notice of Adams.

Lady Steers cruise past Pecos, 69-22

December 8, 2010

The Big Spring Lady Steers experimented a little bit in their 69-22 thrashing of Pecos Tuesday in Steer Gym.

In 10 games, head coach Mark Warren has already found out a lot about this year's squad. But he wants to know how versatile his offense can be no matter if defenses run man-to-man or the zone.

“I thought it would be a good night just to work on things just to see what's our best zone offense, what's our best press — we changed our presses up a little bit,” he said. “Just a lot of fun. It was a good game with everyone getting to play a lot.”

Greenwood avenged a loss to Big Spring in Andrews, so the Steers will look to get back on track with a win at Abilene Cooper at 7:30 p.m. today. Luke Adams is gaining a reputation as the Steers’ go-to player. Head coach Cliff Thompson said opponents are starting to key in on Adams. The senior and Tristain Clay have led Big Spring in scoring so far this season.

Back to state: Garden City thumps Follett for berth in state title game

December 5, 2010

SEYMOUR — It’s hard to catch Garden City head coach Vance Jones without a smile on his face after the Bearkats’ games.

It was no different after his team thwarted Follett 59-14 by halftime in the UIL Six-Man Division I semifinal in Seymour Saturday night.
Then again, it hasn’t been different for the last 28 games.

“I’m still soaking it in,” Jones said, clinching his sixth trip to a state title game and ensuring the Bearkats a chance to win a second consecutive title next week. “This is outstanding. I’m still on Cloud 9.”
