For the 14th time in the last 15 years, the Big Spring High School Speech and Debate Team qualified a team to the University Interscholastic League Cross-Examination State Meet.

Candidate filing to close in two weeks

Person interested in running for a spot have a little less than two weeks remaining to officially declare their candidacy.
Voters in three districts — District 2, currently held by Carmen Harbour, District 4, represented by Bobby McDonald and District 6, where Marvin Boyd is the incumbent — will elect city representatives on May 9.

Residents answer UBS' call, donate blood

Donating blood is giving the gift of life — and on Friday, several local residents were in a giving mood.

United Blood Services of San Angelo parked its Blood Drive bus outside of Back In Motion chiropractic clinic to give residents the chance to donate blood.

Post office back up to speed

It was definitely Friday the 13th for the U.S. Postal Service.

Problems arising during a computer hardware installation Thursday resulted in a nation-wide outage that affected almost all USPS facilities, including the one in Big Spring.

'Technical problems' temporarily shutter post office

February 13, 2015

The Big Spring post office is one of many across the nation that is closed today because of undisclosed technical difficulties, officials said.

The problems affect all aspects of post office operations, including deliveries.

A spokesperson said the post office would resume operations as soon as the technical problems are resolved.

Smith not guilty of murder

February 13, 2015

A 118th District Court jury found Sean Thomas Smith not guilty of murder Thursday afternoon.

The nine-man, three-woman jury apparently agreed with defense lawyers that Smith, of Stanton, acted in self-defense when he shot and killed 26-year-old Carlos Guerrero following an altercation between the two men in the early morning hours of Oct. 14, 2013 in Big Spring.

Murder trial nears conclusion

February 12, 2015

Closing arguments and jury deliberations are expected today in the murder trial of Sean Thomas Smith in 118th District Court.

Smith, of Stanton, stands accused of murder in the Oct. 14, 2013, shooting death of 26-year-old Carlos Guerrero of Big Spring.

Both the prosecution and defense rested their cases Wednesday.

Gas prices climbing

February 12, 2015

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have risen 13.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.99 a gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

This compares with the national average that has increased 12.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.17 a galloon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Lady Steers force playoff for 2nd in 2-4A race

With apologies to Mark Twain, but the rumored demise of the Big Spring High School Lady Steers’ offense may have been untrue.
In fact, if you ask the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs ... it was a bold face lie.
Big Spring garnered double-digit offensive performances from three players on Tuesday night and rolled to an easy 63-38 rout of Sweetwater in a District 2-4A matchup with key playoff implications.
