Larry Rose

Larry Rose, 58, of Midland died Oct. 26, 2014, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Private family services will be at a later date.

Larry was born Sept. 10, 1956, in El Paso. He was a masonry contractor and an avid bowler. He lived most of his life in Abilene. He came to Big Spring in 1997, moving to Midland in 2005. He married Pattie Hill on October 20, 2001, in Las Vegas.

Leslie B. Clemons

Leslie B. Clemons, 82 of Temple died Oct. 19, 2014, at his residence. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Holston Banks, pastor of Shiloh House of Praise, officiating.

He was born to father, Virgil B. Clemons and mother Jeraline Campbell Facey on July 4, 1933, in Gillette, Texas. Both parents preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister Obie Lee Allen in 1996, nephew Wayne Clemons in 1991 and his brother Leroy Clemons in 2013.

Lady Steers wait to find out who playoff foe will be

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers know they are in the playoffs ... they just don't know who they will be playing in the first round of the postseason.
The District 2-4A runner-up, Big Spring will face the loser of the District 1-4A "play-in" game in the first round. Dalhart and Pampa are scheduled to play for the No. 3 seed in the District 1-4A race on Saturday at noon.
Big Spring finished the regular season at 19-19.

BSHS drama department to stage farcical take on Shakespeare classic

Oh Romeo! Where the heck are you?

The first production of the year for the Big Spring High School theater department — “Evening of Culture, Faith Country II” by Mark Landon Smith — is not going to be a work of Shakespeare, but then, it’s not supposed to be.

Don Statham, 71, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Dr. Randy Cotton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, and Pastor Derrick Looney, pastor of Spring Creek Fellowship, officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Frank M. Vela Jr

Frank M. Vela Jr., 78, of Big Spring, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2014 at his residence. Graveside services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Frank was born March 18, 1936, in Big Spring and married Jane Olguin, Oc. 10, 1957.

He was an appliance repairman who used his skills to help those in need.

Sherry Smith McMurray

Sherry Smith McMurray, 68, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at her home at Lake Leon, in Eastland, Texas. Services will be held at Lake Leon Baptist Church, 2601 F.M. 2214, Lake Leon Wednesday Oct. 29, 2014.
Lunch was served at 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. with viewing and visitation from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.. Funeral service was 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Followed by burial at Staff Cemetery. Services provided by Edwards Funeral Home of Eastland, Tx.

Officials mull jail expansion

Officials are eyeing possible expansion of the Howard County Jail.

During their Monday meeting, county commissioners discussed seeking a “variance” from the state jail commission which would be the first step toward expanding the jail by as many as 12 beds.

Howard County’s jail, while relatively new, is getting crowded. The 96-bed facility has been near capacity at several times the past few months, and officials don’t see a likely decrease in the number of prisoners at the jail anytime soon.

Commissioners consider speed limit for county road

A speed limit likely is in store for a Howard County road.

County commissioners reacted favorably during their Monday meeting to a request by County Engineer Brian Klinksiek to post a 35-mph speed limit on Oil Mill Road, a horseshoe-shaped street that connects State Highway 176 with the north service road of Interstate 20.
