Firefighters fill the boots during MDA fundraiser

Firefighters wear some big boots, and on Saturday, they were hoping to fill them up with money.

“Fill the Boot” is an annual fundraiser that firefighters all over the United States participate in to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

BSHS choirs nab 2 sweepstakes awards

The awards keep stacking up at Big Spring High School.

The Big Spring High School varsity choir — Meistersingers — and Men’s Choir each walked away from the UIL Regional Concert and Sight Reading contest held at Midland Lee High School with Sweepstakes awards.

“We are very excited and proud of the students,” said Beth Spence, high school assistant choir director.

Quartet qualify for UIL state meet

Four Big Spring High School students will need to make arrangements to take their final exams early because they will be representing the school at the University Interscholastic League State Tournament.

Kacie Marvin, Amber Monks, Ethan Morlion and Alexess Sosa qualified for the state tournament by placing in the top three of their respective disciplines at the UIL regional tournament held recently on the Texas Tech campus.

Man arrested; stolen property recovered

A 26-year-old Big Spring man was in custody Wednesday after police recovered approximately $15,000 worth of stolen property at a home in the 500 block of N.E. 8th Street.

On Wednesday evening, investigators with the Big Spring Police Department detective division and narcotics unit executed a search warrant at 501 N.E. Eighth St, according to a news release from the police department.

Papa John's to help veterans Saturday

Buy a pizza, help a veteran.

Area residents will be able to patronize a new Big Spring business and help active duty military and veterans at the same time Saturday.

Officials with Papa John’s Pizza, which celebrates its grand opening at the mini-mall next to Wal-Mart Supercenter today, said they will hold a Veteran’s Appreciation Day event from 10 a.m. until midnight Saturday.

BSISD memorial tree dedication Friday

Big Spring Independent School District will hold a community memorial tree dedication at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Blakenship Field to honor three students who died while enrolled at the high school.

Donations of a tree and a memorial plaque were given to the school district earlier this year to honor former students Shelley Lopez (Class of 2017), Lynn Davis (Class of 1982), and Dave Thomas (Class of 1970). Shelley Lopez’ and Lynn Davis’ tree and plaque sets were donated by their families. Members of the Class of 1970 donated the tree and plaque set for Dave Thomas.

Alcohol proposal gaining support

No drinking allowed — not yet, anyway.

While a plan to allow alcohol consumption in the city’s smaller neighborhood parks remains tabled for now, support for the idea is definitely picking up steam.

During their Tuesday meeting, Big Spring City Council members discovered overwhelming support for a proposal to allow alcohol consumption at the La Familia Pavilion at Andries Park in north Big Spring.
