Big Spring City Council members will discuss regulating the use of plastic bags when they meet in regular session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth.

Robbery case goes to trial

Jury selection begins Monday in the aggravated robbery trial of the Big Spring man accused of robbing Big A Shaved Ice at gunpoint last June.

Heriberto Medina-Torres, 21, faces a possible life sentence if convicted of the first degree felony.

24 indicted by grand jury

A Big Spring resident accused of beating a 70-year-old man was among 24 people indicted during this week’s session of the Howard County Grand Jury.

Kellen Eugene Wright, 33, faces second-degree felony charges of injury to the elderly for his alleged role in the assualt, which occurred July 8 at Big Mike’s Liquor Store on the Snyder Highway.

Jaynet Smith Hardin, 76, of Willow Park, formerly of Big Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, in Burleson, Texas. Funeral services with Eastern Star Rites will be Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Elwin Collom, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Coahoma Cemetery. The family invites friends to join them for lunch following the service.

Lenard Dean (JR) Garrard Jr., 47, of Big Spring, died Thursday Oct. 23, 2014, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel. Holston Banks, Pastor of Shiloh House of Praise and Ken Stallings will officiate.

ABILENE — Harrison Lee Denton, 75, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at Coronado Nursing Center from complication of Alzheimer’s. A memorial gathering was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at Royse City Cemetery.

Lee was born on July 29, 1939, to Mort and Alta Mary (Stallcup) Denton in Big Spring. Lee grew up in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School. He worked for and retired from Cosden Refinery in Big Spring. He served in the Marine Crop reserves in Big Spring.

Voting totals near 1K

More than 1,000 Howard County residents are expected to cast ballots by the end of the first week of early voting, officials predict.

Through Thursday, 957 people had voted early in the Nov. 4 general election. Election Administrator Saundra Bloom said 633 people voted in person, while 324 mail-in ballots were received.
