Herald Editor McClellan dies

It is with a heavy heart the Big Spring Herald announces the death of Managing Editor Bill McClellan.

McClellan, 63, died Sunday morning in a San Antonio area hospital following a severe illness.

“We are all shocked and saddened by the news of Bill’s death,” said Rick Nunez, general manager of the Herald. “Our hearts and prayers go out to his family. Bill was not only an integral member of this staff, he was also a wonderful and generous person, well-liked by his co-workers. He will be missed.”

City to host blood drive

February 2, 2015

In response to an urgent need for O-Negative blood, the city of Big Spring will host a community blood drive Friday.

O Negative is the universal blood type and can be safely transfused into anyone. This is especially important in an emergency situation when there is no time to perform a blood type test. All blood types are welcome.

The blood drive is schedule from 11 a.m to 3 .m. inside the City Council Chambers, 307 E. Fourth.

Volunteer firefighters douse pipeline fire

No injuries were reported in a gas pipeline fire Friday morning which was quickly contained by Howard County Volunteer firefighters.

According to Volunteer Chief Tommy Sullivan, the call came in about 10 a.m. of a gas pipeline fire about a mile from County Road 2599.

“A contractor was cutting a T-line into a gas line,” Sullivan said. “I don’t think there was good communication (with the owners of the pipeline) and he didn’t know the line was charged.”

Estacado press lifts Mats to 59-44 victory over Big Spring

LUBBOCK – The Lubbock Estacado Matadors used a stifling press defense and a quick start on Friday night to grind out a tough 59-44 victory over the Big Spring Steers in a key District 2-4A showdown.
The Mats’ ability to put the Steers in a deep hole early in the contest did more to get the Steers off balance than anything. Estacado built a commanding lead in the initial six minutes by reeling off a 16-4 start.

1 dead in Thursday shooting

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in east Big Spring Thursday night.

Big Spring Police Department officers responded to the 1000 block of Stadium shortly after 8 p.m. in reference to a “shots fired” call.

“On arrival, officers found a male subject with a single gunshot wound to the chest,” a BSPD news release stated. “The victim was sitting in a vehicle in the driveway of 1011 Stadium."

Cook off to benefit WTC fund

The weather maybe a little chilly Saturday, but at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles lodge the atmosphere is going to be hot.

The 13th Annual Eagles Chili Cook Off will be held this Saturday at the Eagles lodge with funds benefiting the West Texas Center’s Children in Need Fund.

The fund was established in 2001 and assists with the financial needs of children receiving mental health services from West Texas Centers, officials said.

Study: City trash service adequate for now

The city of Big Spring has enough drivers, vehicles and routes to adequately provide trash collection service to the community, at least for now.

Preliminary results of a months-long study on trash collection commissioned by the city are in, and they show the city has enough assets in place now to provide once-a-week trash pickup for city residents.

Corwin, Brorman honored at chamber banquet

Speechless would be the best way to describe the reaction of both recipients of the Big Spring Area Chamber Man and Woman of the Year announced Tuesday night during the annual chamber banquet.

“I am like her, I don’t know what to say,” said 2015 Man of the Year, Tommy Corwin, referring to the statement made by the previously announced 2015 Woman of the Year recipient Christy Brorman.
