Russell A. Patrick Sr.

June 4, 2014

Dr. Russell A. Patrick Sr., 84, of Big Spring, died Monday, June 2, 2014 in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Mark Lindsey, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

He was born Sept. 4, 1929, in Jennings, Mo. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth with a doctorate degree.

Veteran dove hunt scheduled

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 47 is requesting public assistance to help organize a weekend getaway for disabled U.S. military veterans.

“We’re going to bring four disabled veterans to Howard County, and we’re going to take them on a dove hunt,” said Mike Tarpley, senior vice DAV Chapter 47. “We have at least one place for them to hunt, but we are trying to get enough volunteers to help guide these veterans and more hunting spots.”

Senior Swim under way at family aquatic center

June 3, 2014

The Senior Swim program began today, allowing area seniors allotted time at the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center to perform some light exercises in the pool.

“This is our third year for the program,” said Debbye ValVerde, Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Seniors 50 years old or better are able to utilize the aquatic center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon for some light water excesses if they wish to participate, or they can walk in the lazy river.”

Mr. Stacy's family will receive friends and family Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Nalley-Pickle and Welch Funeral Home. Services for Mr. Stacy will be Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel, officiated by Chaplain Lynn Robertson. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Council, P&Z workshop set for Tuesday

June 2, 2014

Planning for future growth will be the main topic of discussion when the Big Spring City Council holds a joint workshop with the Planning and Zoning Commission at 6 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, 307 E. Fourth.

Discussion will center around the status of update to the city’s comprehensive plan, including the North Sector expansion and the comprehensive plan for the Airport and Industrial Park.

Survey: Gas prices stabilizing

June 2, 2014

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have risen 2.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.45/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

This compares with the national average that has increased 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.64/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Pops rehearsals begin Tuesday

Chorus rehearsals for this year’s Pops in the Park concert will begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church.
