Evelyn Flynt Alsup

Evelyn Flynt Alsup, 87, of Big Spring died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at her residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Rick Cunningham officiating.

She was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Dawson, Texas, and married Clyde Alsup Aug. 27, 1974, in Carlsbad, N.M. He preceded her in death Aug. 8, 1999.
Evelyn graduated from Big Spring High School in 1943. She worked as a substance abuse counselor at Big Spring State Hospital, retiring in 1987. She loved working in her yard and decorating her house.

Hershel E Fowler

Hershel E Fowler, 94, of Marble Falls, Texas, died Sept. 30, 2012, in his home following a long illness. Interment service will be 11 a.m. Friday Oct. 5, 2012, at the Texas State Veteran’s Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ernestine Fowler. They were married in Odessa, Texas.

They had one child, Johnny Ted (JT) Fowler of Austin, Texas. He also has a daughter who lives in Aylesbery England. He is survived by one brother, Ted Fowler of Coahoma Texas, four grandchildren; five great-grand children; and many nieces and nephews.

Police hunting for chicken shop robber

Law enforcement officials are investigating a robbery reported late Monday night at the local Chicken Express restaurant where a masked suspect allegedly attacked an employee and made away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, the robbery was reported at approximately 11 p.m. Monday at the restaurant, located at 2000 E. FM 700.

Construction projects ongoing at Howard College

One construction project at Howard College is nearing completion, while preparations are under way for another.

People can be forgiven if they believe the college has become a permanent construction zone, what with all the work that's been ongoing the past few years. And that impression will continue, at least for the next few months.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHARLIE JAKE TURNER JR., 32, of 4215 Hamilton, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CECILLIA MIRAMONTEZ MIER, 61, of 1201 FM 461, was arrested Monday on a charge of assault by contact.
• CECILIA MIER QUINTANA, 33, of 1201 FM 461, was arrested Monday on a charge of assault by contact.
• MOLLY GALAN, 39, of 1201 Mulberry, was arrested Monday on a charge of assault by contact.

Carolyn Hobbs Alexander

Carolyn Hobbs Alexander, 64, of Sweetwater, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Ward Hayes, Dr. Travis Monday and the Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Cauley to discuss teaching method at Saturday book signing

A new method of learning will be introduced Saturday.

“Reading and Spelling Pure and Simple,” written by local author Deede Cauley, will be featured at the Heritage Museum during a book signing from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

“I didn't plan on writing a book, it just kind of happened,” Cauley said.

The book is the product of an invitation to help four students learn to read. According to Cauley there was a short amount of time allotted to work with the students and she soon found herself rewriting lesson plans to accommodate what the children were needing to learn.
