Top students to be honored by Commissioners Monday

The top male and female senior students at Forsan, Coahoma and Big Spring will be honored by county leaders Monday when the Howard County Commissioners meet.

Celtic folk music duo to play at charity concert

Game 2 of Lady Steers' playoff series pushed back

The starting time for Game 2 of the Big Spring High School Lady Steers' best-of-3 playoff series with the Andrews Lady Mustangs has been pushed back by BSISD and AISD officials due to wet field conditions at Lady Steers Park.

The game will be played at 4 p.m. this afternoon (Saturday, May 9), BSHS head coach Howell Martin said in a release to media outlets. The game had been originally set to begin at noon.

Andrews took a 1-0 lead in the area playoff matchup on Friday night by claiming a 3-2 victory in Andrews.

Rally to protest rising property valuations

A group of local residents aren’t going to accept their new property valuations quietly.

Those residents, outraged by what they describe as unreasonably high valuations, are bringing their complaints right to the appraisal district’s doorstep — they have scheduled a rally for 11 a.m. May 21 in the Pocket Park next to the county annex building.

Municipal, school elections Saturday

Howard County voters will head to the polls Saturday for municipal and school board elections.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Ballots for the Big Spring municipal and school district trustee races can be cast at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum foyer located on the Howard College campus. Coahoma city and school district constituents may vote at the Coahoma Community Center.

One dead in Martin County crash

A 32-year-old Abilene man died Thursday after a two-vehicle fatality in Martin County ended with both vehicles engulfed in flames.

According to Trooper Elena Viramontes, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, James Ray Alexander was pronounced dead by Martin County Justice of the Peace Pam McAnally. The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 20 just inside the Stanton city limits.

Rains boost lake levels

Two days of intense rainfall in Borden County has produced 14 months of additional water supply for the cities served by the Colorado Municipal Water District with more run off expected to flow in.

As of today, Lake J.B. Thomas had risen 9.89 vertical feet and gained 51,810 acre-feet of new water supplies, according to information released by the CRWMD.

CRMWD is reporting this morning that Lake Thomas is now 69.84 percent full, however, that number is still expected to change.

Stampede to celebrate 61st anniversary Saturday

Most dance halls come and go, but most dance halls aren’t the Stampede.

The venerable Big Spring establishment will celebrate its 61st anniversary Saturday with a special dance featuring Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys, along with special guest Jason Roberts. Doors open at 8 p.m., with the dance following from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is $20 per person.

The Stampede first opened its doors May 8, 1954 and has been owned by the Nix family ever since.
