MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium.
Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards.
Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just over 2 minutes to play.

City council passes rezoning of property

Big Spring’s city council unanimously approved a rezoning ordinance which will allow development of 29 acres adjacent to Comanche Trail Lake into an addition featuring residences, restaurants and a hotel during a special meeting Thursday evening.

No timetable has been set for development of the area, located in the vicinity of Highway 87 and Village Road, to begin, but it will feature apartments and other residences, assisted living, a 3-to-5 story hotel and a pair of restaurants.

Not surprisingly, VA Medical Center looking for health care professionals

For anyone who needs a job, the VA Medical Center is hiring.

Physicians, nurses, physicians assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses aides and volunteers are all needed. VAMC officials at a town hall meeting held Thursday evening addressed this and other issues that have plagued the Big Spring VA for many years.

John Phillip Hamilton

John Phillip Hamilton, 83, formerly of Big Spring, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, in Graham. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Murray Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

John was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Lubbock to the late Reece Burl and Georgia May (Saunders) Hamilton. He graduated from Cooper High School, Lubbock in 1948, received a BS and MA from North Texas State University, Denton and a BD and MRE from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.

VA employees come to aid of food bank

Isaiah 58 Food Bank received tons of help — literally — from the local VA Medical Center.

Staff from the VAMC capped off their annual canned food drive Wednesday by donating more than 5,000 pounds of food items to Isaiah 58.

Tickets available for United Way fundraiser

For 70 years, United Way of Big Spring and Howard County has offered a helping hand to agencies which provide us a helping hand, and now they’re asking for our help, as well.

The United Way’s 70th annual campaign begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Big Spring Country Club with its annual Boots and Bling Kick-off, an event which will offer attendees food, entertainment and a chance to earn some nice prizes, as well — all while helping the various agencies supported by UW.

Undine Kernodle

September 4, 2014

September 3, 2014 was a bittersweet day for Undine Kernodle as she left her family on Earth to join her Savior and loved ones in Heaven. Her life will be remembered with a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Memorial Park.

Undine was born Nov. 6, 1927 in Durham, N.C. She met her sweetheart Alan Kernodle in North Carolina but had to follow him to Big Spring for marriage and a family. She and Alan shared 62 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, both girls.

Winnie Bobo Dodson

Winnie Bobo Dodson, 74, of Coahoma, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Coahoma, with the Rev. Elwin Collum, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and the Rev. Mark Winn, pastor of First Baptist Church of Coahoma, officiating. Burial will follow in Coahoma Cemetery.
