County to finalize tax rate Monday

Howard County commissioners will look to put the finishing touches on their 2012-2013 fiscal plan Monday, as the court looks to adopt its tax rate for the coming year.
The court — which approved its 2012-2013 budget during the Sept. 10 meeting — will consider adopting a tax rate of 33 cents per $100 valuation during the meeting.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ERNESTO ALONZO, 39, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd., was arrested Friday on a warrant for driving without being secured by safety belt.
• BRESHA DENAE RANDLE, 19, of 1805 Mittel Ave., was arrested Friday on warrants for fail to appear (x2), expired registration and failed to control speed.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 1600 block of E. Sixth.
In the 3500 block of E. I-20.
In the 1100 block of Hwy 176.
In the 300 block of S. Rex in Forsan.

Annette ‘Ann’ Marie Weaver

Annette “Ann” Marie Weaver, 81, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Weaver Family & Friends Cemetery with Wade Cobb, minister of the Gathering in Midland, officiating.

Emily Rodriguez, daughter of Veronica Martinez Rodriguez and Rigo Rodriguez of Mesquite, Texas, was born Aug. 30, 2012.
She weighed 10 pounds and 10 ounces.
She is the granddaughter of Oralia and John C. Tovias of Big Spring. She is the great granddaughter of Ofelia Flores of Big Spring.

Jeri Lynn Kenton of Big Spring, daughter of the late Bill and the late Pat Kenton, and Bill Stockton of Big Spring, son of Larry and Janie Stockton, announce their engagement.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Edwin “Tex” and Caroline Kenton and E.M. “Buddy” and Gladys Cohn, all deceased.
The prospective groom is the grandson of G.B. and Ethel Stockton and Clint and Evasue James, all deceased.
Jeri is employed at Texas Wicks. Bill is employed at Deserts Quarries.
The couple plans to exchange wedding vows Oct. 11, 2012, at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Rodendo and MaryAnn Jimenez of Big Spring, Texas are pleased to announce the engagement and marriage of their daughter Christina Jimenez of Big Spring.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert and Maria Gonzales of Big Spring.
The prospective groom is Jerry Ray Griego, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Holacher of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and the late Phillip T. Griego.
The wedding will be held at the Dora Roberts Community Center in Big Spring on Sept. 29, 2012.

BSHS fans ready for homecoming festivities

Light the bonfire, strike up the band and don the black and gold — Big Spring homecoming time has arrived.

Big Spring High School 2012 homecoming celebrations kick into high gear tonight and continue with events scheduled through Saturday.

BSHS students have marked homecoming all week with themed “dress up days,” but really get a chance to celebrate tonight at the annual bonfire rally. This year, the bonfire has been moved from the the old city compost facility to a vacant lot adjacent to Memorial Stadium. The event is scheduled to begin at around 8 p.m.

ISD enrollments get an A+; Big Spring exceeds 4,000 for 1st time in more than a decade

School enrollment is busting out all over, it seems.

Fueled by the oil industry hiring boom, most area public schools are seeing a surge in enrollment figures, officials confirmed.

Nowhere is the increase more notable than at Big Spring Independent School District, which is recording enrollment figures not seen in more than a decade.

The latest count shows 4,148 students enrolled at BSISD campuses, an increase of more than 200 from the same time last year — and that figure doesn't take into account more than 80 children enrolled in pre-kindergarten classes.

• JOSE MONTEMAYOR JR., 45, of 427 E. Davis Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for speeding in a school zone.
• AMARIS BERNAL, 25, address unknown, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for theft – more than $50 and less than $500.
• BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported:
In the 2500 block of Langley.
In the 3700 block of Dixon.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 2300 block of Kentucky.
• THEFT was reported in the 1900 block of Wasson.
