9/11 ceremony set Tuesday at mall

Crossroads area residents have an opportunity to honor fallen heroes Tuesday with the fifth 9/11 ceremony at the Big Spring Mall.
More than 250 people attended the brief ceremony last year. This year's ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Special speaker will be Big Spring resident two-star General Major Eddy Spurgin. Other local dignitaries will participate.
Mike Tarpley, Vietnam veteran who has conducted each of the 9/11 ceremonies, said it is crucial we remember our veterans and what they have done.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• LLOYD PHILLIP HANSARD, 27, of 804 W. Interstate Highway 20, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MASON JACK SNOW WILBANKS, 33, of 1202 E. Third St., was arrested Sunday on charges of failure to identify – giving false information, resisting arrest, search or transportation and assault – family violence.
• JOSE ORTEGA, 20, of 1111 E. 14th St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Local teens arrested for Memorial vandalism

Four Big Spring teens were arrested this morning in connection with the recent vandalization of the local Vietnam Memorial.
According to law enforcement officials, the arrests included:
• Devan James Clark, 17, on charges of criminal mischief – damage to school, church or monument and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair.
• Anthony Alphonso Lewis, 17, on a charge of criminal mischief – damage to school, church or monument.

Bonnie 'Bunky' Griffis

Bonnie “Bunky” Griffis, 68, of Kerrville, formerly of Big Spring died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at her residence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Memorial Park.
She was born June 24, 1944, in Big Spring to Clara and Lewis White. She moved to Kerrville in 2009. She was a cook and had been employed at Texas Instruments in Midland/Odessa.

L.C. Hurst

September 10, 2012

L.C. Hurst, 83, of Big Spring died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment with Masonic rites will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Jan. 24, 1929, in De Kalb, Texas, and married Virginia Conley on May 3, 1966, in Denver City, Texas. She preceded him in death June 3, 1992.

Joe H. Whirley

September 10, 2012

Joe H. Whirley died at 12:55 a.m. Sept. 8, 2012, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 91. He was born in Windom, Texas, on March 23, 1921. The Colorado City area was home to him in his youth and he was saved at the Dorn Chapel in 1937.

Steers stomp Mustangs

Two down, eight to go — that is the official count after Big Spring Head Football Coach Phillip Ritchey's bold, preseason prediction of taking the Steers from an 0-10 team to a 10-0 team in just one season.

Last week, Big Spring throttled Fort Stockton 49-0 in the season opener. The comeback continued on the new turf recently laid at Memorial Stadium on Friday as Big Spring upset Midland Christian — reigning TAPPS 4A state champions — 17-12.

Again, Ritchey was surprised at the fortitude displayed by his team.

Forsan ISD mulls new campus

FORSAN — No one is using the words “bond election” just yet, but Forsan Independent School District officials are studying the very real possibility of asking voters to approve construction of a new elementary school.

When they meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room, FISD trustees will consider hiring a financial advisor to help them with details pertaining to a possible bond election which could be called for sometime in 2013.

School district officials have been considering replacing Elbow Elementary for some time, Superintendent Randy Johnson said.

Hearings Monday on county budget, tax rate

Howard County commissioners are set to hold public hearings Monday morning concerning the proposed 2012-2013 tax rate and budget, as the county looks to move forward with its fiscal plan for the coming year.
According to County Auditor Jackie Olson, commissioners will be moving forward with a proposed rate of 33 cents per $100 valuation.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ANNIKKA MARIE TREJO, 24, of CR 104 El Toro Rd., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CANDIDA LYNN WHITEHEAD, 39, of 3706 Connally Street, was arrested Friday on charges of failed to maintain financial responsibility, expired motor vehicle inspection certification and warrant other agency.
• JOHNATHON PAUL BUSTAMANTE, 23, of Odessa, was arrested Friday on a charge of no drivers license when unlicensed.
