Christmas parade winners announced

Here are the top award winners from the 27th annual Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade, held Saturday evening:

Best in show (interpretation of parade theme) — City of Big Spring.

Publisher’s Award (best use of lighting) — HEB.

Grand Marshal’s Award (best use of costuming) — Alon.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JUAN MANUEL GONZALEZ, 34, of 2310 S. Runnels, was arrested Sunday on charges of failure to signal within required distance and driving while license invalid – DWI related.
• GONZALO HERNANDEZ GONZALES, 36, of Bonham, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ANSELMO HILARIO JR., 27, of 1409 Bluebird, was arrested Sunday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.

Vernon M. Gill

Vernon M. Gill, 96, of Garden City died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the Garden City Cemetery, located in Garden City, Texas.

He was born in Nolan County to Bob and Clara Holloway Gill. Vernon moved to Glasscock County in 1928 and graduated from Garden City High School in 1933. In 1935, he moved to Sterling County, where he met Glenda Cox. They married March 17, 1937.

Randell 'Wade' Compton

Randell "Wade" Compton, 50, of Dallas, formerly of Big Spring died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, in a Plano hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery, in Greenwood.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the funeral home.

Lajuana Carole Montgomery

December 3, 2012

Lajuana Carole Montgomery, 77, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at Parkview Nursing Home in Big Spring.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, please send a donation to your favorite charity.

Lajuana was born Feb. 7, 1935 in Stamford, Texas. She was raised in Stamford and married James Elwood Montgomery Sept. 26, 1955, in Stamford. They made Odessa their home, where she remained until July 2011, when she moved to Big Spring. Elwood preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1997.

William 'Bill' Dickson

William "Bill" Dickson, 76, of Coahoma died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Craig Wascom and the Rev. Billy Guy officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Fresno, Calif. and married Dana Reeves June 25, 1960 in Stockton, Calif.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

Area hoops teams faring well in holiday tourneys

Big Spring
SAN ANGELO — The Lady Steers (5-4) have been victorious in two-out-of-three games at the Doug McCutchen Basketball Tournament in San Angelo as of press time. Big Spring opened the tourney Thursday with a 48-44 loss to Midland Classical Academy, but had a chance to win in the fourth period as they outscored the Lady Knights 16-11 and trailed by a single point before MCA sealed the game.

Leading the Lady Steers in scoring was Dyrshae Vanderbilt with 14 points. Logan Yarbar added eight points and Yaneira Tuitt chipped in seven.

Man faces felony charges after car chase

A Big Spring man was arrested Wednesday night after law enforcement officials say a domestic dispute turned into a short vehicle pursuit that endangered the welfare of three children.

Michael Shay Vanderbilt, 38, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. (apartment number not provided) was arrested in the 1500 block of Wood Street and charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and three counts of abandoning/endangering a child – criminal negligence.

Police locate missing resident

A 70-year-old Big Spring man who was the subject of an area-wide search this week has been located, according to law enforcement officials.

Jimmy Aaron Batie, a resident of the Canterbury retirement facility, was reported missing earlier this week after police officials say he was last seen during the evening hours Saturday in the 1700 block of S. Lancaster.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, Batie was located this morning in another city, apparently in a disoriented state.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• AMANDA LOUISE CHRISTIAN, 39, of 1700 S. Donley, was arrested Wednesday on two warrants from another agency.
• KEVIN DEWAYNE MORRIS, 28, of 1144 Mulberry, was arrested Wednesday on two warrants from another agency.
• ANGELA ANN MCGEE, 30, of 105 W. 24th St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
