John Thomas Christon "Tommy", 75, of Stanton died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Stanton with the Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.
He was born May 31, 1937, in Ewing, Neb., and married Sue Neeley June 9, 1957, in Crane, Texas.
Former Big Spring resident Robert J. Wylie, 75, of Ropesville, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. Family and friends gathered Sunday, Sept. 2, for fellowship at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street. A celebration of his life was held Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers with Lee Butt officiating and John Smith assisting.
It has cost more and taken longer than anyone anticipated, but once renovation of the Settles Hotel is complete, officials said people are going to be wowed by what they see.
Renovation for the historic Big Spring landmark, which was built in 1930, will end up costing almost 100 times its original construction price tag of $500,000, officials said.
âAs of (Thursday), we've passed the $30 million mark (on renovation costs), and we still have a ways to go,â said Project Director Bill Cole.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â¢ JOSEPH YANEZ, 40, of 1408 Oriole, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
â¢ IRMA MORIN YANEZ, 39, of 1408 Oriole, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
â¢ OSCAR CANALES, 55, of 1700 S. Main, was arrested Sunday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired driver's license, expired motor vehicle inspection certificate, accumulated items/weeds/rubbish (two counts) and failure to appear.
Charles Ralph Walker, 81, of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, in a Lubbock hospital following a sudden illness.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Cotton officiating. Private interment will be at Trinity Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at Myers and Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
He was born June 13, 1931, in Howard County to Mack Willis and Edna Graham Walker. He married Marian Murphy in Big Spring on Nov. 4, 1955.
Manuela Gamboa Galan, 78, of Big Spring died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at her residence. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
She was born June 1, 1934, in Big Spring to Florencia and Elias Gamboa. She married Isidoro Galan on Dec. 31, 1949, in Big Spring. She was a lifetime resident of Big Spring.
She was a homemaker, but also worked as head cashier at Webb Air Force Base cafeteria. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Pasco Buddy Enfield, 89, of Big Spring died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
FORT STOCKTON â The Big Spring Steers stunned a lot of people Friday with a 49-0 shellacking of the Fort Stockton Panthers. The big victory snapped a 12-game losing streak for BSHS and doubtless instilled confidence in Head Coach Phillip Ritchey and his squad.
Tobyn Tannehill, the sophomore sibling of the Miami Dolphins' quarterback Ryan Tannehill, went 11-of-14 passing and racked up 239 yards as well as rushed for 36 yards in his first varsity start.
The first seven Steer possessions were all driven down the field for touchdowns â all with Tannehill at the helm.
An accident left one man dead early Friday morning just north of Big Spring.
An 18-wheeler and a motorcycle collided about a half mile north of Interstate 20 on U.S. Highway 87 about 6 a.m.
According to Department of Public Safety, the victim â driver of the motorcycle â is 30-year-old Nathaniel Meyer. Unconfirmed reports state that Meyer was not wearing a helmet upon impact with the 18-wheeler.
No injuries were reported in regard to the truck driver. Due to the accident, northbound traffic was blocked off for several hours.
There is still time to grab a booth space for the 2012 Howard County Fair.
The fair, set for Sept. 27-29, will once again take place at the Howard County Fairbarn. Gates will open from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28 and from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.
âAt this time, we are trying to get the vendors lined up for this yearâs fair,â John Paul Nichols, Howard County Fair publicity director, said.
Last year, there were more than 50 booths in the fair. Booth spaces are available for profit and non-profit vendors.
