Barbara Jean Vieira

August 28, 2012

Barbara Jean Vieira, 77, of Weatherford, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Memorial Park with Pastor Ron Liles officiating.

Barbara was born to Grady and Mary Gardner on July 3, 1935, in Birmingham, Ala. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Women’s International Bowling Congress. She worked for the Bowl-a-Rama for many years.

Guadalupe R. 'Lupe' Gonzales

Guadalupe R. “Lupe” Gonzales, 86, of Big Spring died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Del Rio, Texas, to Teodora and Felipe Ramirez. She moved to Big Spring in 1941and married Carmen Gonzales on Sept. 7, 1948, in Big Spring. He preceded her in death Feb. 6, 2007.

Guadalupe Gonzales, 86, of Big Spring died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

John Floyd Griffin

August 27, 2012

John Floyd Griffin, 90, of Stanton went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at his residence. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Stanton with the Rev. David Harp officiating. Private interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at the funeral home.

Lucy Belle Hoover

Lucy Belle Hoover, 88, of Big Spring died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at her residence. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at the Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins officiating.
Lucy was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Forrest, N.M. She moved to Pennsylvania in the late 1930s and worked for Jackson China. She moved to Big Spring in 1941 and began working for the Big Spring Bombadier School as a secretary. Soon after, she married Jay Hoover on Sept. 3, 1943, and became a homemaker with the Settles Hotel being their first home.

DAV chapter enjoying new 'home'

A new home, but the same important mission.
Since June, the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans — Chapter 47 — has been meeting in a new building. The facility, once the Haven House, is located at 2204 Runnels.
“I was approached in February and asked if I knew of a use for the building that could benefit veterans,” Mike Tarpley, Chapter 47 DAV senior vice commander, said. “I told them I had an idea.”
The previous meeting location, 610 Abrams, was at the point of falling apart. Tarpley joked, “if the termites ever quit holding hands the building would fall over.

Vandals hit vets memorial

Local law enforcement is investigating a report of vandalism and theft at the Big Spring Vietnam Memorial believed to have occurred sometime between Friday night and Sunday morning.
Damage was reported in two areas of the memorial, including the helicopter display. According to law enforcement officials, items were also taken from the display, including a World War II web belt and canteen which were on display in the Fallen Soldier Memorial case.

Anglin verdict upheld by appeals court

August 27, 2012

A Big Spring man convicted in 2010 of taking part in a home invasion had his case affirmed by the 11th District Court of Appeals this week.
Clifford Leon Anglin, 27, was found guilty of charges — including aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony — stemming from the June 5 home invasion of a family in the 600 block of State Street following a trial in 118th District Court in September 2011. Anglin was sentenced to 60 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JESSE HILARIO FIERRO JR., 42, of 1802 State, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• BENJAMIN EDWARD MOORE II, 32, of 1209 Pickens, was arrested Sunday on warrants for driving while license invalid, criminal trespass of a habitation or shelter and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• OLIVIA ALICIA CASTILLO, 18, of San Antonio, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
