CASA in need of volunteers

It's all for the best interest of the child.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is gearing up to train more volunteers. Training for the Howard County area will begin April 11 and continue through April 21.

“Ideally, we would like to bring on at least 10 new Howard County volunteers,†Robin Reece, volunteer coordinator, said.

Routine agenda for city council

Tuesday's meeting of the Big Spring City Council features a rather routine agenda, as the government panel looks to give final approval to a resolution supporting House Joint Resolution 56, a bill currently being considered by the Texas Legislature that would outlaw certain mandates in the Lone Star State.

During its Feb. 22 meeting, the council approved first reading of the resolution, which calls for a constitutional amendment prohibiting unfunded and underâ€funded mandates passed down from the state level to city and county governments.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• DANIEL MONTEZ VIERA SR., 23, of 1907 S. Main St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JUAN ARNULFO CARDONA, 25, of 109 Algerita, was arrested Saturday on charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, driving while intoxicated – open container, no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear (three counts).
• AMANDA RENEE MCGREGOR, 22, of Lamesa, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

'Pray for Rain' service set Thursday

Area residents will turn their need for moisture over to God Thursday evening, as area clergy and lay pastors gather to hold a rally to pray for rain at First Baptist Church.

Tim Blackshear, former Big Spring mayor and rally organizer, said the prayer rally will be based around 2 Chronicles 7:14. “

Gem and Mineral Show runs through Sunday

Joyce Speed believes you haven't met a nice person until you've met a rockhound.

Speed should know. She and her husband, Delbert, log thousands of of miles annually in their RV, traveling to gem shows in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and she has been a devoted mineral enthusiast for almost 50 years.

So when she says events such as the 42nd annual Big Spring Prospector's Club Gem and Mineral Show are a treat, she has experience to back up her claim.

The Big Spring Herald reported the following activity Friday and early Saturday:
• WALKER WAGONER LITTLEJOHN, 17, Winston Salem, N.C., was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and runaway.
• JANTE LAMAR CHEEVES, 30, Converse, was arrested on two warrants for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.
• LEONARD SHANE SLATON, 45, 205 W. 15th, was arrested on a charge of theft over $1,500/less than $20,000.
• DANIEL MONTEZ VIERA, 23, 1907 S. Main, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.

Hunt for Hailey goes on

COLORADO CITY — It's been more than two months since 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn mysteriously disappeared from her home in Colorado City, and while searches for the girl continue throughout the West Texas region, investigators say there have been no new breaks in the case.

Chase Allen Musgrove, 23, of Big Spring, died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at University Medical Center in Lubbock. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with Clint Collins, pastor of Life Church, officiating.  Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Mary Jane De La Garza Garcia, 61, of Big Spring, died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Hospice House in Odessa.  Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Bryan Vincent, 35, of Vernon died Thursday, March 3, 2011, in Baylor County. Funeral service will be Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Revs. Harold Brown, Doug Shelly and Barney Railsback. Interment will be at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
