Mary Elizabeth Birks died June 9, 2012, at the age of 75. She was born in Stanton, Texas, to Leonard and Sallie White.

She is survived by her loving family, including her son, Michael McGann Sambogna and partner Ron Watterson; daughter, Nancy Shoults and husband Mike and their children, Erin Elizabeth, Michael David and Hannah Ann Shoults; daughter, Patricia Hardiman and husband Mike and their daughters, Whitley Elizabeth Esteban, Samantha Ann Esteban and Lilli Grace Hardiman; son, Felix Sambogna and wife Karen and their children, Jordan Elizabeth and Ryan Dominic Sambogna.

Viola Pearl Ritter Rogers

Viola Pearl Ritter Rogers, 90, died Sunday, July 22, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Edgar Funeral Home in Marble Falls, Texas.

She was born to Melvin A. and Lilly Pearl Watts Ritter on Nov. 6, 1921, in Alan, Okla. She was married to the late Woodrow W. Rogers for 47 years and as a stay-at-home mom, raising their children, Beverly Sue Grantham, Gary Rogers and Rowena Rogers Brooks while living in Big Spring.

Some construction project to continue into 2013

Big Spring Independent School District is about to unveil four new elementary campuses, but that doesn't mean school construction is finished. In fact, hard hats are expected to be much in evidence for the lion's share of the coming school year.

The four new schools are undeniably the centerpieces of the $60 million project approved by voters two years ago, and their unveiling will undoubtedly be a cause for celebration by BSISD officials. That celebration begins in earnest with a series of ribbon cutting ceremonies scheduled for Aug. 9.

• MEDICAL was reported in the 700 block of W. Interstate Highway 20. One person was transported to SMMC.
• MEDICAL was reported in the 600 block of Culp in Coahoma. One person was transported to SMMC.
• MEDICAL was reported in the 2000 block of Nolan. Service refused.
• MEDICAL was reported in the 1400 block of N. Highway 87. One person was transported to SMMC.
• MEDICAL was reported in the 1100 block of Lancaster. One person was transported to SMMC.

Katherine 'Kate' Kincade

Katherine "Kate" Kincade, 56, of Big Spring died Friday, July 20, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the funeral home.

She was born Dec. 20, 1955, in Lamoni, Iowa, and married Luis Kincade on March 17, 1990, in Socorro, N.M.

Kate moved to Socorro, N.M., in 1986 from Lamoni, Iowa, and then to Big Spring in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Luis Kincade of Big Spring; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kincade of Odessa; one brother; and one sister.

Mayor proposes radical change to EDC

In a surprise move pushed forward by Mayor Tommy Duncan, the Big Spring City Council is set to consider a radical reorganization and repurposing of the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation that could see the dismissal of the agency's board of directors.

300 acres lost in fire

A wildfire swept through northeast Big Spring Sunday afternoon, and while the blaze managed to scorch between 300 and 400 acres of scrubland and came dangerously close to a number of homes, no structures were lost, according to local firefighting officials.

Firefighters with the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by the Big Spring Fire Department, Howard County and the City of Big Spring responded to the fire shortly after noon Sunday at an area northeast of the intersection of FM 700 and Interstate Highway 20.

Because of computer problems, there was no activity report from the Big Spring Police Department.

The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 p.m. today (Note: The Howard County Jail reported 72 prisoners):
• JOREGE LUIS GOMEZ JR., 21, was jailed on charges of public intoxicaton and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• ANGIE KATHERINE MOORE, 41, was jailed on a charge of public intoxication.
• ALLEN DAVID GILBERT, 37, was jailed on a charge by check of property over $0 but less than $500.
