Joe Vera, 55, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Albuquerque, N.M. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Lucy Thorpe, 55, of Abilene, formerly of Big Spring, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with David Cason, pastor of Broadview Baptist Church of Abilene, officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Memorial Park.
She was born July 10, 1957, in Big Spring, Texas to Annabel and David Mendez. She lived most of her life in Big Spring. She had worked at Newsomâ€™s and J.C.Penney. She married Kenneth Thorpe. She moved to Abilene in 1998 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Broadview Baptist Church of Abilene.
Eric Howard Lanspery, 56, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in a Midland hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Green, Jr., officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Feb. 14, 1956, in Tachikowa, Japan. Eric had lived in Big Spring all his life and owned Wilson Auto Electric. He loved watching his grandkids play ball; golfing and watching the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. He was kind and generous and would help anyone.
Mike Tarpley, local veteran, has been named Patriot of the Year 2012-13 for Region V by the Military Order of Purple Hearts.
Region V is comprised of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Colorado. The award was presented by Commander Federico Rey.
Mr. Tarpley was to have received the award Sept. 22, 2012, but instead chose to stay in Big Spring to be in attendance for the POW/MIA services set for the morning of Sept. 21, 2012.
Tyson David Whitehead, son of Lauren Chandler Whitehead and Brett Whitehead of San Angelo, was born Aug. 30, 2012, at San Angelo Community Hospital in San Angelo, Texas.
He weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and measured 20 inches long.
His maternal grandparents are Linda and Wayne Chandler of Big Spring. His paternal grandparents are Marta Cox of Canton, Okla., and Glenn Whitehead of Austin.
Hallie (White) Gillispie was elected coming home queen when the Ackerly/Sands exes met for the 2012 reunion during homecoming week. She is shown with her son Kenny Gillispie.
The exes convened in the â€śnewâ€ť Sands High School auditorium Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, in Ackerly.
Hallie is an ex-student of Ackerly/Sands school, having graduated with the Ackerly class of 1949. She received her crown from Dorothy (Baker) Rogers. Coming home queen of 2009-2012. Dorothy is a graduate of the Ackerly class of 1955.
Inclement weather has forced the postponement of Forsan High School's game with Crane, which was originally scheduled for this evening.
The game will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Crane.
COAHOMA â€” A swamped football field has forced Coahoma Independent School District officials to radically alter homecoming plans for tonight.
Superintendent Amy Jacobs said tonight's football game vs. Ballinger has been moved to Forsan High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Coahoma High School homecoming activities scheduled for tonight have been postponed. The queen and king coronations will be held at halftime of the Coahoma-Stanton football game Oct. 12, while the homecoming dance also has been postponed and will be held at a later date.

Heavy rain this morning has produced both smiles and headaches for Howard County residents.
A confluence of three storm systems has produced heavy rainfall throughout the county and the Permian Basin early today. Midland-Odessa International Airport recorded three inches of rain since 1 a.m. today, while Big Spring Airport unofficially received two inches of precipitation as of 9 this morning.
