BRECKENRIDGE â€” Ollie Denning, 82, of Breckenridge, Texas, went to be with his Lord on Oct. 29, 2012. Ollie was born Feb. 2, 1930, in Graham, Texas, to Charlie Denning and Jessie Alice Bilby. He married JoAnn Frazier on Aug. 8, 1949, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Ollie began his refinery career at Onyx Oil Refinery in Abilene, Texas, and was transferred to Cosden (Fina) Refinery in Big Spring, Texas, in 1958.
Pedro M. â€śPeteâ€ť Salazar Sr., 70, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at his residence. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Deacon Johnny Arguello officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Nueces County, Texas, to Dominga and Adolfo Salazar. He farmed for 45 years on the Robert Beall Farm. He was a lifetime resident of Howard County and a Catholic.
Bill Griffen, 73, of Big Spring died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Richard Harold Parker, 75, of Knott died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in a San Diego, Calif., hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
The Steers have lost three straight. After a nearly flawless 5-0 start, Big Spring has yet to taste victory in District 4-3A. It appears unlikely â€” barring some miracle â€” the Steers will be making a playoff appearance. It may sound bleak, but this time last season, the Steers were winless. With that perspective, 5-3 isnâ€™t all that bad.
ALPINE â€” The Lady Steers volleyball squad opened postseason play with a bi-district win over Fabens at Sul Ross State University on Tuesday. Big Spring only needed four sets to defeat the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Steers dropped the first set 27-29, but came back to win three straight by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-11.
Posting a 28-14 record on the season, No. 17 ranked Big Spring only lost three district matches and will travel to Lubbock Coronado on Saturday to face the Dalhart Lady Wolves. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a Big Spring man believed to have been involved in the shooting death of a 33-year-old man early Saturday morning.
According to investigators with the Howard County Sheriff's Office, an arrest warrant on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon has been issued for 19-year-old Chris Daniel Marquez of Big Spring.
The warrant was issued by Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman, according to a press release issued Monday morning by Sheriff Stan Parker.
â€śMore charges are expected as the case continues to develop,â€ť Parker said Monday.
Averaging approximately 500 ballots a day so far during early voting, election officials say Howard County is on track to collect upwards of 10,000 voters in this year's general election.
According to Howard County Election Administrator Saundra Bloom, her office has averaged approximately 500 in-office voters a day since early voting opened Monday â€” a whopping 617 Monday, 580 on Tuesday and 491 recorded Wednesday â€” with no signs of slowing.

â€˘ JUSTIN DELAGARZA, 27, of Midland, was arrested Sunday on a charge of theft â€“ more than $50 and less than $500.
â€˘ DANIEL WAYNE MCKNIGHT, 35, of 1114 Mulberry, was arrested Sunday on two warrants from other agencies.
â€˘ MARY ELIZABETH RODRIGUEZ, 45, of 104 N.E. Ninth St., was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency and a charge of failure to identify as a fugitive â€“ giving false information.
David Rosales Marquez, 90, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
David was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Big Spring and married Juanita Ramirez on June 26, 1988, in Big Spring. He worked in the street maintenance department for the city of Big Spring for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
