Nancy Arlene Reed

April 9, 2012

Nancy Arlene Reed, 61, of Stanton, formerly of Big Spring died Friday, April 6, 2012, at Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit. Private family services will be held at a later date.
She was born July 10, 1950, in Hamlin, Texas, to Lou Dan (Branscum) Reed and Sam Houston Reed. She grew up in Big Spring. She had been a resident of Big Spring for more than 50 years. She worked for many years at Malone-Hogan Hospital and retired in 1989 from the Big Spring State Hospital after 17 years of service. She was a member of God’s Rainbow Promises in Midland, Texas.

Annalee Hillger Sims 'MiMi'

Annalee Hillger Sims “MiMi” went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on April 7, 2012. She had a wonderful, warm and giving heart. She has a large family that continually grows with new members. She welcomed everyone she met with open, loving arms.

Faye Jean (Miss Faye) McGee

Faye Jean (Miss Faye) McGee, 54, of Big Spring died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Holston Banks and Minister Kathy McGee officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Hamlin East Cemetery in Hamlin, Texas.

Patsy Ruth Rowe-Humphries

Patsy Ruth Rowe-Humphries was born to B.G. “Jack” Shepard and Patti Jewel Vernon March 24, 1926, in Dallas, Texas, and left this world with her loving husband, Jack, by her side April 7, 2012, at the age of 86.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery in Coahoma, Texas.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, April 9, 2012, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Some serious horsing around

Easter may be the season of the bunny, but kids at Washington Elementary School were learning about horses last week.
Anne-Marie Lugo — an eighth grader at Forsan Junior High School — and her mother, Cindy, visited with the kindergartners about animal needs.
“The students in Mrs. (Yvonne) Loya's class sent us a very nice letter and asked if we would come and speak to them,” Cindy said.
During the afternoon presentation, Anne-Marie and her mother spoke about the basic needs of a horse, proper etiquette when around a horse and answered any questions the students had.

Museum on museums: Exhibit opens Tuesday

Museums are known to hold history, all kinds of history. Sometimes, they have the opportunity to tell a little of their own.
The newest exhibit at the Heritage Museum, 'Our Houses of History: Portraits of Rural Texas Museums,” will do just that.
“Our former museum curator, Beth Williams Purcell, has compiled photographs displaying the history and importance of museums,” said Tammy Schrecengost, museum curator.
The photographic display will open with a meet and greet reception with Purcell, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• TRESSA SUE MILAN, 33, of Fort Stockton, was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• AMANDA LEE NIETO, 18, of 1400 Virginia, was arrested Saturday on warrants for expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and failure to appear.
• ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 47, of 1023 Stadium, was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ERNEST WILLIAM CLARK, 71, transient, was arrested Saturday on a charge of criminal trespass.

Tax help deadline Monday

Monday will be area residents' last chance to get free assistance with filing their tax returns from the annual AARP Tax Aid program, as the April 17 federal deadline to file forms quickly approaches.

According to program coordinator Ray Alexander, it has been a busy tax season for him and his team of volunteers, and with just days left to file federal returns, the last-minute rush will be on for many Crossroads residents.

Academics team wins district title

Hail to the champs.

Spurred by dominating showings from its speech and journalism teams, Big spring High School claimed the District 5-3A title at this week's University Interscholastic League Spring Academic Meet at the BSHS campus.

Big Spring totaled 456 points to edge Abilene Wylie (424.5 points), while Snyder (363 points) finished third. This is BSHS' first academic district crown since moving down to Class 3A in 2010.

Elbow students get hands-on look at high-tech future

LEGOs + robots = learning?

Elbow Elementary students are working — not playing (OK, maybe a little play) — with LEGOs and robots while gaining an insight into engineering.

For the first time, GT (gifted and talented) students in grades second through fifth at Elbow are taking part in the LEGO Robotics Challenge. Students traveled to the Texas Tech campus in Lubbock on March 24 to participate in a practice run and will return for actual competition April 21. There will be about 65 elementary teams competing.
