September 1, 2012

“Fill the Boot!” was the cry heard from Big Spring firefighters Saturday.
Members of the BSFD stood at the intersection on Gregg Street in hopes of raising funds in the battle against muscular dystrophy.
“This is a really good cause and we are proud to be able to support it,” BSFD Lt. Greg McAlister said.
All funds raised Saturday will remain local and provide support for families dealing with muscular dystrophy — a group of inherited disorders involving muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue, which progressively can get worse over time.

The Buffaloes and Bulldogs battled through early afternoon heat, cramps and dehydration issues, and a scoreboard that failed during the first quarter, leaving both teams coaches to manage the time without an official time clock.

When the smoke cleared, Forsan was the victor, narrowly defeating Coahoma — who won least year's meeting by a point — 30-27.

DPS to be out in force Labor Day weekend

August 31, 2012

It's never a good idea to drink and drive, but law enforcement officials say it will be particularly foolish this weekend.

As it has in past years, the Texas Department of Public Safety will increase DWI patrols during the Labor Day holiday weekend, officials said. DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

During the Labor Day enforcement effort last year, DPS troopers made more than 2,000 DWI arrests and approximately 550 of those were the direct result of the increased patrols, officials said.
