Gutierrez birth

March 10, 2012

Noah Lee Gutierrez, son of Brody Gutierrez and Josephine Mendez of Big Spring, was born Feb. 29, 2012, at 11:51 a.m.
Noah weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and measured 19 inches long.
His maternal grandparents are Mrs. Norma Arenivaz and Mr. Greg Arenivaz both of Big Spring. His paternal grandparents are Angie Gutierrez and Will Gutierrez of Forsan.

Evans engagement

Mike and Anna Evans of Big Spring, announce the engagement of their daughter Ashton Lauren Evans to Blake Rea, both of Houston.
The bride-elect is a 2006 graduate of Big Spring High School and a 2011 graduate of Texas A&M University. She is employed by Texas Transportation Institute.
The prospective groom is a 2004 graduate of Pine Tree High School in Longview and a 2010 graduate of Texas A&M University. He is employed by Alstom.
The couple plans to exchange wedding vows June 30, 2012, at Travis Park United Methodist Church in San Antonio.

Barnett wedding

Charity Warren and Robert Barnett, both of LaGrange, Texas, exchanged wedding vows at 4 p.m. Feb. 7, 2012, at the Chapel of the Bells in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The bride is the daughter of Kenneth and Vickie Reed of Big spring.
The groom is the son of Joyce Riddle of Big Spring.
The couple spent their honeymoon in Las Vegas.

City officials under scrutiny

The Texas Ethics Commission has begun an investigation into a complaint by a local resident that a trio of Big Spring City Council members accepted illegal campaign donations while running for municipal office.

According to reports filed with TEC, complaints have been filed against Mayor Tommy Duncan, District 1 Councilman Marcus Fernandez and District 3 Councilman Glen Carrigan by local resident Joyce Crooker.

Deputies seize horses after complaint

Law enforcement officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office euthanized one horse and seized nearly a dozen others from a home in the 100 block of Carey this week after they acted on a citizen complaint the animals weren't being properly cared for.

Sheriff Stan Parker said deputies responded to a complaint Wednesday at a home located just past the city limits.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANDREW JOHN ROSENBERG, 40, of 303 E. Eighth St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JUAN ANTONIO SALAZAR, 18, of 1604 E. 11th Place, was arrested Thursday on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor.
• SERGIO DAVID ALVAREZ, 23, of 606 Steakley, was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of controlled substance between one and four grams and possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces in a drug free zone.

Toni Barron Choate

Toni Barron Choate of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, March 3, 2012, at the age of 73. She was a lifelong resident of Big Spring before moving to Midland in 2005. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1001 Goliad, Big Spring. The Rev. Barbara Kirk-Norris of St. Mary's, Fr. Tom Finne of Christ Church of Midland and the Rev. Katie Churchwell of Washington, D.C., will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Parish Hall until 4 p.m.

Bruce Thomas

Bruce Thomas, 63, of Big Spring died Monday, March 5, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. A celebration of Bruce’s life will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Marvin Boyles Auto Service, 102 Young, next to Southwest Tool. Friends are asked to bring one food item.

Billy Charles Davis, 75, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Oak Crest Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Visitation with Mr. Davis’ family will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Hawks open Region V with win

LUBBOCK – Hard work apparently pays off.

The Howard College Hawks spent much of the week leading up to the Region V junior college basketball tournament fine-tuning their defense and the results of all that preparation were on display Thursday at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center.

The Hawks delivered a stunning defensive performance in the first half of their tournament opener and that was more than enough to secure them an 85-57 victory over Weatherford College.
