Eldon Cook left this world to be with his heavenly father Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. Eldon was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Stamford, Texas, in the home of his parents, James Ollie and Willy Katherine (Hornsby) Cook.
Julie Ann Hallford Mince, 39, of Big Spring, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30 p.m until 8 p.m at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1972, in Big Spring, Texas. and was a lifelong resident of Big Spring, attending Marcy Elementary, Goliad Middle school, Runnels Junior High and Big Spring High. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother.
Rodney 'Ronnie' Garza, 56, of Big Spring died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at his residence. Vigil services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Rodney was born Feb. 16, 1956, in Trenton, N.J. He was a beloved son, brother and uncle. Rodney lived in many places in the world, due to his fatherâ€™s military career.
One of Rodneyâ€™s greatest passions was cooking, which culminated in his participation in several grand opening ceremonies for Marriott Hotels.
Let the campaign begin â€¦ well, almost.
United Way of Big Spring and Howard County hosted its annual campaign kickoff, Boots and Bling, Saturday night. During the event, the organization's new campaign goal â€” $300,000 â€” was announced through the words of Dr. Seuss.
â€śSo let's get on our way of kicking of our campaign of $300,000,â€ť Ann McClarty, United Way first vice president, said. â€śWill we succeed? Yes, we will succeed, 100 percent guaranteed.â€ť
Money raised in the 2013 campaign will help support 16 local agencies:
The local Salvation Army is currently taking applications for its annual back-to-school supply drive, as the charity hopes to send are children back to class with all the materials necessary for a successful school year.
According to Bessie Flores, social worker for the charity group, the Salvation Army will accept applications for assistance through the program through Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Salvation Army office located at 811 W. Fifth St.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â€˘ JAMIE JONES CHAPPELL, 35, of 1200 Madison, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ SHAWN WILLIAM TOW, 27, of Oklahoma, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ FREDERICK HERNANDEZ, 42, of 1405 S. Runnels, was arrested Sunday on warrants for driving while license invalid (two counts).
â€˘ CLIFTON LEWIS SCOTT, 35, of 538 Westover Rd. Apt. 206, was arrested Sunday on charges of assault â€“ family violence and interfering with an emergency phone call.

Jury selection in the trial of a 27-year-old Big Spring man facing multiple charges â€” including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon â€” is set to begin in 118th District Court Monday morning.
Brian Christopher Lewis, 27, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, was indicted Feb. 3 on charges of deadly conduct, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

With the start of the new school year less than two weeks away, Howard County school districts have announced times and dates for students to pick up schedules or meet their teachers.
Classes begin Aug. 27 at Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan.
Big Spring High School officials announced the following schedule pick-up times:
â€˘ Seniors â€” from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday.
â€˘ Juniors â€” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
â€˘ Sophomores â€” from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday.
