Area residents who haven’t paid their property taxes have until the end of January to ante up their 2010 tabs or face penalties and interest, according to local tax officials.
Area property owners can avoid the annual last-minute dash to pay their taxes by getting them out of the way early in the month, according to County Tax Assessor Kathy Sayles.
Time is running out for area residents looking to get rid of their mountain of Christmas trash — wrapping paper, boxes, bows — without a trip to the landfill.
Trash containers set up last week in the parking lots of Coronado Plaza, Big Spring Mall, College Park Shopping Center, Howard County Fair Barn and in the 700 block of N. Gregg Street are set to be removed Wednesday, according to officials with the city of Big Spring.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• GRACIELA LEAL, 39, of 505 S. Aylesford, was arrested Monday on a warrant for of failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• CODY NICOLAS SPOLLINO, 23, of 3910 Parkway, was arrested Monday on warrants for possession of marijuana – two ounces or less and delivery of marijuana – less than ¼ ounce.
• RODOLFO GONZALES JR., 49, of 1601 Johnson, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.

Walter Owen Kelly, 87, of Stanton passed away peacefully Dec. 25, 2010, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Downtown Church of Christ in Stanton with Elmore Johnson, retired pastor, and Deral McWhorter officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. The family will receive friends at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Carl B. Riherd of Robinson passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at his residence. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Freeto officiating. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey.
Wilma Holley Cashion, 85, of Greenville, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Memorial Park. Observers of the area agriculture scene agree: This year's cotton crop could have better, but it could have been worse, too.
A crop that's been called “better than average” and is bringing in record prices is winding its way through area cotton gins, meaning that area producers can soon put a bow on this year's efforts.
