Police blotter

December 24, 2010

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity Thursday and early Friday:
• JONATHON MICHAEL PAUL, 30, 605 Circle, was arrested on charges of driving while license invalid/previous conviction, criminal mischief over $500/under $1,500, failure to maintain financial responsibility and a warrant from another agency.
• ADRIAN PATRICK VALENCIA, 22, 908 S. Nolan, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended/previous conviction.
• LEONARD GUZMAN, 24, 1504 Vines, was arrested on a warrant from another agency.

Alisha Ann Brewer, 32, of Big Spring died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at her residence after a long illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Courtney Ballard, pastor of the Cowboy Church, officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Patricia T. Smith (Punkin Sawyers), 57, of Midland, passed away Dec. 22, 2010, at her residence. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Kelview Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Berry, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Garden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Retailers: Shoppers buying locally

Local shoppers aren't necessarily buying more this Christmas, but they appear to be shopping at home, which has Big Spring retailers happy.

An informal survey of several local businesses shows an increase in holiday sales over last year. While several businessmen declined comment, citing company policy, others said it appears that Howard County residents are shopping Big Spring first.

Ambassadors bringing their bounce to Big Spring

The world-famous Harlem Ambassadors basketball squad will be coming to the Crossroads area in February, part of a community project the Big Spring Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is putting together for area children.

According to Sonnet Hildebrand, director of the local Boys and Girls Club, the Ambassadors are slated to perform Feb. 23, but before the first slam dunk can be driven home, her and her staff will have to raise funds for the project.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• HENRY JOHN RAYMOND, 37, of 1905 Wasson Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MARK TIMOTHY STANLEY, 49, of 1800 S. Lancaster, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of criminal trespass.
• RAYMOND JOSEPH BONNER, 29, of San Angelo, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license invalid – DWI related.
• LETISHA KAY MENDEZ, 29, of 1905 Wasson Rd. Apt. 25, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance.

HCSO tight-lipped on investigation of found skull

Law enforcement officials are remaining tight-lipped regarding an investigation into what may be a human skull discovered Monday morning at a location in northern Howard County.

A press release issued by the Howard County Sheriff's Office Monday morning advised law enforcement officials were called to the scene around 11 a.m. at an undisclosed location in northern Howard County after what appears to be a piece of a human skull was found.
