Ed Moughon knows the importance of volunteers.
â€śBig Spring State Hospital patients are provided exemplary care by the hospitalâ€™s more than 600 employees.
But the volunteers provide the warm touches that personalize their care and take it to a higher level,â€ť Moughon, state hospital superintendent, said.
â€śThe hospitalâ€™s volunteers are integral to the hospitalâ€™s day-to-day success, Their contributions are noticed daily, and once a year hospital employees publicly honor the more than 50 volunteers.â€ť
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â€˘ BILLY MANN KIRK, 66, of 627 State, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
â€˘ RICHARD JAMES WHITE JR., 35, of 315 E. Alice, was arrested Saturday on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance.
â€˘ ROLANDO ZAMORA JR., 22, of 1612 Bluebird, was arrested Saturday on warrants for disregarding a stop sign, failure to appear (two counts) and no safety seat system for child.
The Big Spring City Council is expected to deny a rate increase requested by Atmos Energy's West Texas Division during its meeting Tuesday night, a move city officials say is necessary due to a breakdown in negotiations.
The council gave final approval to suspend the rate increase by a unanimous vote in late February, a move designed to give the city time to study the request, according to City Finance Director Peggy Walker.
Nancy Elaine Robbins, 68, of Big Spring died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at her residence. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
William August "W.A." Ringener, 92, of Stanton died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the Downtown Church of Christ with Darel McWhorter officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2012, at Gilbreath Funeral Home.
Marie Chapman, 92, of Big Spring died Sunday, May 6, 2012. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Park with Rick Cunningham officiating.
She was born April 1, 1920, in DeLeon, Texas, to Zonie and John Lancaster. She and her twin brother, Marion Lancaster, were the youngest of nine children. When Marie was two, the family came to Howard County in a covered wagon.
Early voting totals are down in this year's municipal contest, according to local election officials, with just two days left to cast early ballots next week.
Early voting polls netted just 778 ballots â€” 678 in-person and 100 mail-in ballots â€” during the first five days of early voting, according to Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom, less than what she had expected in the contest.
â€śConsidering the volatility of the 4B tax project on the ballot, I had really expected to see higher totals by this point,â€ť Bloom said.
Ready the sparklers and the aerials, planning for Pops in the Park is under way.
Tuesday, July 3 will once again be the date for the celebration. However, the show will start at 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes later than normal.
â€śWe don't know how much difference it will make, but we are hoping temperatures will be a little bit cooler,â€ť Jan Hansen, Pops in the Park chairman said.
Another change taking place this year will be the partnership with a new fireworks company out of Fort Worth. This year Atlas will be providing the fireworks used in the display.

â€˘ JORGE LIMA-MONDRAGON, 37, of 1425 Japonica Ln., was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
Raul Martinez, 51, of Big Spring died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. A prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Craig Wascom of First Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
