50th anniversary

March 16, 2012

Edward and Jean Slate will celebrate their 50th anniversary March 24 with a family gathering in the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Randy Elder of McKinney. Also hosting the event will be their son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Kim Slate of Burleson. Unable to attend are their younger son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Ruth Slate, Mandeville La.  The Slates have been blessed with 10 grandchildren, five boys and five girls.

United Way applications due May 4

Just as the community is important to the continuance of the United Way, the agencies are important to the purpose supported by the United Way.

“We wouldn't be able to provide the help we do if it weren't for the community support, but then again we wouldn't be needed if there weren't agencies needing our support,” Executive Director Sandy Stewart said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• VIVIANA DANIELLA SARMIENTO, 29, of 1405 Park St., was arrested Thursday on charges of hindering officers discharging official duties and possession of a controlled substance.
• NOELIA CARRILLO, 38, of 1733 Purdue, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• MONA ALICIA SALDANA, 26, of 1400 Virginia, was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.

Steers split doubleheader against Seminole

Mix baseball with a prize fight and you'd have an idea how the Big Spring-Seminole baseball doubleheader went Thursday.

The Steers and Indians traded leads instead of haymakers, and the end result was a split decision — Big Spring came from behind to win game one, 11-10, before dropping game two 6-2.

With the results, Big Spring's record now stands at 10-9.

The Steers started off strong in Thursday's opener, scoring the game's first two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Hoops, Dreams and Goals tournament set March 30

The thump, thump of basketballs can be heard across gyms around the country as tournaments ranging from the Big East to the Big XII get underway. But the thump, thump, thump of basketballs can also be heard in small recreation centers and outside courtyards across rural West Texas as participants in the upcoming Hoops, Dreams and Goals practice their jump shots for the annual hoopfest.

The Eighth Hoops Dreams and Goals 2012 competition is scheduled March 30 at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

Lions Club, Dr. Marshall keeping an eye on youth

• BRODIE LEE DUNN, 32, of 1706 Young St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JASON ORTEGA, 30, of 1208 Lloyd, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of assault – family violence.
• RACHEL NIKOLE GONZALES, 22, of 2330 N. Highway 208 Apt. 14 in Colorado City, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.

Wilma Oneta Riffe Kyle

Wilma Oneta Riffe Kyle, 71, of Shepherd, Texas, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012. She was born in Shepherd, Texas, on Feb. 24, 1941, to Willie L. and Gladys Jewel Riffe.

Survivors include her son, Bendle G. Kyle Jr.; daughters, Chequita Kyle, Gladys Feaster and Vanessa Lee; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fannie Overton, Sue Kautz and Linda Nolan; brothers, John, Charles, Archie and Robert Riffe; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lizzie Deanna; and brother, Billy Riffe.
