Second-half surge lifts Mustangs past Steers, 52-47

Andrews knocked down 17 free throws and raced to a 52-47 come-from-behind win over the Big Spring Steers in non-district basketball action.
Overall, Andrews made 17 of 27 free throw attempts in the contest. In contrast, Big Spring went to the charity stripe just 14 times in the contest, making six.

Silver Wings Ball set for Saturday

Tickets are rapidly disappearing for the first black-tie event in Big Spring this year.

By Tuesday morning, only 40 tickets were left for the Silver Wings Ball, a semi-formal affair held annually to benefit the Hangar 25 Air Museum, according to Amber Stokes, museum director.

Gas price plunge continues

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 6.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.97 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 7.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.19 a gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

AARP tax aid on tap

Although the infamous April 15 Tax Day is more than four months away, volunteers with the local AARP tax assistance program are already preparing for what maybe an interesting season.

This year is the first time the penalty for the Affordable Care Act kicks in. Taxpayers who did not have medical coverage in the past year will have to pay a penalty that may impact their tax refund. How it will is still a question.

BSISD's Ferrell, 58, dies

Big Spring ISD administration and staff are morning the loss of one of their own today.

Daniel A. “Danny” Ferrell, the district’s assistant superintendent, died Sunday night at a Martin County hospital after a short illness. Ferell has served the district since 2009.

Downed power line causes Forsan to go dark

The sun finally came out Saturday, but the immediate outlook was anything but bright for some Howard County residents.

Sunshine was a welcome sight to West Texas this morning after cold, wintery weather left freezing precipitation and streets slick and icy.

However, the cold front didn’t give up without a fight as freezing rain fell last night, adding more ice in the trees and on power lines. That caused a different kind of problem for area emergency personnel who had been busy responding to automobile wrecks the last few days.

Weather to remain cold for now

The sun will come out, but not tomorrow.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland, residents may start to see some relief from the freezing rain and slick streets by mid-Saturday but near freezing weather is still expected to stick around for several days.
