United Way exceeds goal

And the numbers are in …
Blitz Day ended the 2012 Big Spring and Howard County United Way campaign Friday afternoon. The campaign, which started Sept. 1, concluded after three months with an expected goal of $275,000 being exceeded. As of Friday afternoon, the total amount collected was $294,000.
“It has been a wild ride, but we made it and ended up exceeding our numbers,” said Wayland Pierce, United Way president. “We have surpassed our goal, ended on a good note and still have monies trickling in.”

Thomas M. Yeats Jr., died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the age of 87. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Cotton and the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Richard "Dick" Allen Battle of San Antonio, passed away Nov. 18, 2011, at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Eddy Pitchford, minister of the Coahoma Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Salvation Army finalizing Thanksgiving plans

It's turkey time at the Big Spring Salvation Army, as the local charity prepares to open its arms — and its kitchen — to the community for its annual Thanksgiving dinner Thursday.

Prep work for the dinner is expected to get under way as early as Tuesday, according to Salvation Army Social Worker Bessie Flores, continuing daily until the Thursday meal is ready to be served.

• ELEUTERIO TORRES PADRON, 62, of 509 N. Goliad St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• GARY LEE SMALE JR., 37, of 538 Westover St. 105, was arrested Friday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid previous conviction.
• DON LLOYD BROOKS, 45, of 1712 E. 15th St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• AVEL ABREO RAMIREZ, 64, of 1512 Wood St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.

HC trustees to eye upgrades to library

Howard College officials are looking at ways to use a $250,000 gift to help improve their library.

When trustees meet at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room, they will hear a report on the college library and officials hopes of modernizing the facility.

When administrators were drawing up plans for construction bond projects several years ago, the library was not high on the list of priorities, College President Cheryl Sparks admitted.
