Host families sought for foreign students

It’s about bringing the unforgettable experience home.
Local resident Karen Ivy is working with Center for Cultural Interexchange to ensure area residents are able to experience different cultures without ever having to leave home. For the past three years, Ivy has been serving as area coordinator and as a host family.
“I wanted to have the experience of being able to teach them (the students) about American culture,” Ivy said. “It’s a chance to share our life experiences.”

Aquatics Center to get second look by council

Big Spring City Council is expected to put the finishing touches on ordinances and the fee schedule for the new municipal aquatic center Tuesday night, just in time for the facility’s grand opening next month.
First reading of the amendments to the city code and ordinances passed on a 6-1 vote May 10, with District 2 Councilman Manuel Ramirez Jr. the lone dissenter.
At the heart of Ramirez’s argument against the fee schedule is the proposed $5 entrance fee for swimmers age 3 years and up, a sharp increase from the $2 fee charged before the municipal swimming pool was closed.

Alyssa is the daughter of Dan and Marlene Halvorson of Red Wing, Minn.
Brent is an elementary teacher and a coach in Spring Valley, Minn. Alyssa is a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Brent is the grandson of Angela D. Rodriguez of Big Spring and the late Antonio R. Rodriguez, Sr.

The couple will exchange wedding vows in Red Wing, Minn.

26 indicted by grand jury

A former Howard County employee accused of tampering with government records was among 27 people indicted during this week's session of the county grand jury.

Jamie R. Weaver, 35, of Forsan, stands charged of two counts of tampering with a governmental record and two counts of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Forsan ISD faces price hikes

FORSAN — Increases in salaries, health insurance and cafeteria costs will be the focus of Forsan Independent School District trustees when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

FISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said the district has received notification that employee health insurance costs will increase in the coming school year.

College eyes low-performing programs

County likely to renew public defender agreement

Capital murder cases can end up costing county governments a significant amount of money, so Howard County commissioners have purchased an insurance policy of sorts to help keep those costs down in the future.

When they convene at 10 a.m. Monday, commissioners are expected to renew an agreement with Lubbock County which provides public defenders for capital murder defendants.
