100th birthday celebration

August 20, 2011

Nadine Hodnett celebrated her 100th birthday at the Park View Nursing Home Wednesday with family and friends. A lifelong resident of Texas, she has lived in Howard County since 1930. Her grandfather Alex Haynes came to Big Spring in 1904 and bought a section of land four miles north of town while her parents raised nine children in Fluvana. Her father, Henry Haynes was stationmaster for the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railroad and her brothers farmed the section of land where they lived.

Buchanan and Berg engagement

Rory and Susan Buchanan of Ozona, announce the engagement of their daughter, Brandi Nichole Buchanan to Justin Robert Berg, son of Bob and Gloria Berg of Marwayne, Alberta, Canada.
Brandi is a 2004 graduate of Ozona High School. She received her associates of science from South Plains College and is a 2011 graduate of Howard College with an associates of applied science in dental hygiene.

Coble birth

August 20, 2011

Graciee Rae'Lynn Coble, daughter of Felicia Dawn Coble, of Big Spring and Robert Ray Coble, of Big Spring, was born July 22, 2011, at 3:20 p.m.
She weighed four pounds and 15 ounces and measured 17 ½ ounces.
Her maternal grandparents are Melanie Dawn Patterson of Big Spring and Gary Lee Miller of Big Spring. Her paternal grandparents are Kathy Geraldon of Big Spring and Robert Coble of Chanute, Kan. and great-grandparents are Linda Patterson and Dale Patterson of Big Spring.

Bustamante birth

August 20, 2011

Dominick Izaak Bustamante, son of Cayla Rodriguez and Justin Bustamante of Big Spring was born Aug. 8, 2011, at 9:50 p.m.
Dominick weighed 6 pounds 1.5 ounces and measured 18 ½ inches long.
His maternal grandparents are Grace and John Rodriguez of Big Spring and paternal grandparents are Jacob and Irma Bustamante of Big Spring.

BSISD hopes to keep construction inconveniences to a minimum

New school years often mean changes, and the one that starts here Monday is no different.

And while most of the changes are somewhat subtle and not always noticeable to the general public, the biggest change at Big Spring Independent School District will be obvious to everyone.

Construction on four new elementary campuses, part of a $60 million renovation of the school district's infrastructure, will be in full swing during the coming school year and officials are promising to do everything they can to keep disruptions and inconveniences to a minimum.

School days prompt change in aquatic center hours

Summertime is almost over, but that doesn't mean fun at the pool has to stop entirely.

The Big Spring Family Aquatic Center will be changing hours of operation, but won't be closing just yet. After this weekend, the aquatic center will be closed during the week and open only on weekends. New hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through the end of September, according to Terri Telchick, assistant city manager secretary.

“We are looking forward to keeping this successful summer going,” Telchick said. “We want to have summer last as long as possible.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• GILBERT RECIO JR., 38, of 1007 Wood, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• DAVID REY GONZALES, 40, of 404 NE 10th St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• GLORIA ORALIA GUTIERREZ, 21, of 2505 March St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant for disorderly conduct by fighting.
• SAMMY FERRELL, 49, of 509 N. Johnson St., was arrested Thursday on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct language.

Phyllis Graumann

August 19, 2011

Phyllis Graumann, 79, a long-term resident of Big Spring, passed away in the Lord, on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, in Plano. She was born April 18, 1932, in Mangum, Okla., to Marie and Ed Montgomery and married August Graumann in Granite, Okla., on Feb. 18, 1950.

Maria Hinojos, 79, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

T.A. 'Hamp' Burcham

T.A. "Hamp" Burcham, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park, Big Spring, Texas.
