Lady Liberty to get a facelift

August 27, 2011

Repairs are finally beginning on Lady Liberty and before long she will be back where she belongs — in front of the Municipal Auditorium.

After a few chance circumstances, Terry Kessler, owner of Hester's Mechanical Contractors Inc., decided to not only take a look, but agreed to help repair the Statue of Liberty replica that was toppled from its perch in front of the auditorium earlier this year.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• DON LLOYD BROOKS, 45, of 1304 Wood, was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• NOLAN-CASEY RAYMOND-LU MOORE, 22, of 600 Avondale, was arrested Friday on charges of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces and disorderly conduct/noise.
• AMBER RENEE RAMIREZ, 27, of 611 N. San Antonio, was arrested Friday on charges of driving while license invalid and failure to appear.

Alice Ann Crown

Alice Ann Crown of Denton, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Aug. 21, 2011, in a Denton hospital.
A memorial service was held Aug. 24, 2011, in Denton.
She was born in Ludlow, Vt., on Dec. 13, 1943, to Phyllis Marie Waite and Albert Bulley. She worked for Coffee & Coffee Attorneys at Law while she lived in Big Spring. She married Kenneth Crown on March 24, 1992, in Sterling City. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2010.

Isidora ‘Lola’ Salgado

August 27, 2011

Funeral services for Isidora “Lola” Salgado have been set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Tim Schwertner officiating and Deacon Clemente Villa assisting. Interment will follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Isidora, age 89, passed away in Stanton. She was born in San Antonio del Bravo, Chihuahua, Mexico, on April 4, 1922. Her parents were Felix Martinez and Lyz Prieto.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Salgado; a son, Abelado Salgado; and her parents, Felix and Lyz Martinez.

Nehl — Driver wedding

August 27, 2011

Stacey Nicole Nehl of Port Huron, Mich., and James Robert Driver of Seminole exchanged wedding vows Aug. 23, 2011, at 2:15 p.m.
The ceremony was held in Howard County and was performed by Justice of the Peace Bennie Green.
Stacey is the daughter of Kelly Scott of Amarillo and Jerome Nehl of Port Huron, Mich. James is the son of Bob and Mary Driver of Big Spring.

Bailey — Kirby wedding

August 27, 2011

Audra Lynn Bailey of Big Spring and Jared Eugene Kirby of Pleasanton were united in marriage Sept.19, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Los Patios in San Antonio. Paul Kirby, uncle of the groom, officiated. A reception followed at The Brazier at Los Patios. A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s parents at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen.
The bride is the daughter of Mike and Denise Bailey of Big Spring. The groom is the son of Jerry and Martha Kirby of Pleasanton.

Zetterstrom — Kendall wedding

Kathryn Dawes Zetterstrom and Jeffrey Phillip Kendall were joined in holy matrimony at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 6, 2011, in the sanctuary of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Lubbock. Officiating at the double ring ceremony was the Rev. Ann Akin, associate pastor at St. John’s. Organist Sigurd Ogard presented prenuptial music on the Holtkamp tracker pipe organ. The bride, escorted by her father, Joseph O’Hara Dawes, processed to Nun Danket Alle Gott by Karg-Elert. The recessional was the St. Anne Prelude by J.S. Bach. Raymond Edward Ellis Smith, cousin of the bride, lighted the alter candles.

Alon sues appraisal district again

Attorneys for Alon USA — owner of the Big Spring Refinery — have filed a lawsuit in 118th District Court against the Howard County Appraisal District contesting the most recent valuation of the facility, which was placed at approximately $215 million.

Chief Appraiser for the district Brett McKibben confirmed Thursday he has been told the suit has been filed, but said neither he nor the appraisal district have been served with legal papers concerning the matter.

McIntosh named to BSISD school board

You can toss out the “Vacancy” sign in front of the Big Spring Independent School District board room.

BSISD trustees voted unanimously during their Thursday meeting to name the Rev. Kenneth McIntosh the school district's representative from District 3.

McIntosh, a native of Tulsa, Okla., has been pastor of Big Spring's First Christian Church for the past five years. He replaces Alan Partee, who declined to seek re-election, on the school board.

The position had been vacant since the May general election.
