BSISD sets early release for Friday

Big Spring Independent School District will have early dismissal of classes for grades 7-12 Friday to allow students to attend the Region I Volleyball Meet in Snyder.
Big Spring High School's Lady Steers will take on Andrews at 1 p.m. Friday on the Western Texas College campus. The winner will advance to the finals Saturday to face either Abilene Wylie or Monahans.
Grades 7-12 will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Grades K-6 will remain in school until their regular dismissal times unless a parent or guardian signs their child out through the office.

Baby scalded; suspect arrested

STANTON — A 1-year-old Martin County boy is listed in serious condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock and a 24-year-old Stanton man is in custody after law enforcement officials say the child was injured by scalding water Tuesday evening.
Dominick Peña, 24, has been charged with injury to a child, a first-degree felony. Martin County Sheriff John Woodward said Peña was still in the custody of the sheriff's office this morning after his bond had been set at $100,000.

Forsan fights for playoff spot

Missing key elements to their team, the Forsan Buffaloes went into last week's battle with Hawley needing a 13-point victory to make the playoffs. Brendan Roman had one of his best games of the season and To'a Maumau exploded onto the scene in relief of injured Foster Burchett to gain the Buffaloes a 32-19 win, edging Forsan past Hawley into the final playoff spot.

Coahoma enters playoffs

After last week's 40-6 loss at the hands of district champion Idalou, the Coahoma Bulldogs are ready to get back on the field. The Dogs will travel to Plainview Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. clash with Spearman.
The 8-2 Spearman Lynx finished the regular season in third place in their district behind Sanford-Fritch and Abernathy.

Council votes to expedite EDC info

The Big Spring City Council approved first reading of a resolution Tuesday evening, streamlining the way the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation will deliver its quarterly reports to the governing body.
Under the existing requirements, the Big Spring EDC Board of Directors are required to meet with the city council during their quarterly meetings, according to EDC Director Terry Wegman.

Robinson Drilling is cited by OSHA

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Big Spring-based Robinson Drilling for eight serious, four repeat and 11 other-than-serious safety and health violations following the June 11 death of two workers at the company’s work site near Lamesa.

Air museum to honor vets, unveil new exhibit Friday

Hangar 25 Air Museum will remember and honor those who served their country at an ice cream social from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and revealing a new exhibit — Hangar History: A Flight Through Time.
“This is going to be an opportunity to do something fun and honor veterans at the same time,” Genevieve Stockburger, museum administrator, said.
The event is open to the entire community.
“Too often, Veterans Day is overlooked and this is a time to recognize the military history of the community,” Stockburger said.

As expected, voter turnout very poor

Less than 5 percent of Howard County registered voters turned out to cast their ballot in this year’s constitutional amendment election, with polls closing at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Howard County saw a total of 654 ballots cast — 272 during early voting, 28 mail-in ballots and 354 cast Tuesday — accounting for just 4 percent of the registered voters, according to official election reports.
Among the proposed amendments, Proposition 1 drew the most attention in the Crossroads area, which is heavily populated by military veterans.
