Army proposes to stage training exercise in this area

War games — make that “unconventional” war games — are coming to this area later this year.

During their 10 a.m. meeting Monday, Howard County Commissioners will hear a presentation on plans by the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command to hold a training exercise in the Crossroads area from July to September.

Autopsy ordered in Big Spring man's death

An autopsy has been ordered in the death of 35-year-old Roy Cervantes, whose body was struck by a train east of Big Spring Friday morning.

According Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, emergency personnel were called to the railroad tracks east of North FM 700 at approximately 8 a.m. in response to a train/pedestrian accident.

Vechicle inspection stickers phased out with new program

Say goodbye to the sticker.

This month, state motor vehicle officials began the transition to having just one sticker for vehicle inspection and registration, and vehicle owners will follow two steps to get their one sticker.

Beginning last Sunday, Texas stopped issuing vehicle inspection stickers and changed to a “Two Steps, One Sticker” inspection and registration program. Under the new system, Texas vehicle owners will need to pass inspection prior to renewing their registration. The familiar blue-bordered registration sticker will serve as proof of both inspection and registration.

Gem and Mineral Show starts Saturday

The Annual Gem and Mineral show will kick off Saturday, March 7 at the Howard County Fair Grounds.

According to Lola Lamb, Howard County Prospector’s Club secretary/treasurer, there will be dealers from Lubbock, Big Spring, Midland, and a variety of other places bringing in merchandise from all over.

“They will have rough rocks, smooth rocks and gems from ordinary stones to precious gems for sale.” said Lamb.

Relay for Life fundraiser Saturday

It’s starting to look like Relay time.

Teams participating in the Glasscock-Howard County Relay for Life fundraiser will be at the Spring Town Plaza Mall Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise funds and awareness about cancer research.
