The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• KEITH GENE WILSON, 40, of 3703 Connally, was arrested Saturday on charges of disorderly conduct – language and possession of a controlled substance.
• JUAN PAUL GARZA, 47, of 1507 Lincoln, was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• SCOTT HUNTER MANLY, 61, of Midland, was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ERNESTO GALLEGOS, 31, of 4213 Hamilton, was arrested Saturday on charges of no driver's license – when unlicensed and defective stop lamps.

Festival draws more than 100 visitors so far

More than 100 vendors have signed up to participate in this year's Funtastic Fourth Festival, sponsored by Alon USA and the Downtown Revitalization Association.
The event is planned for Saturday, July 2 in downtown Big Spring and will feature live bands, a pet parade and pet contest, hot dog eating contest, food and wares vendors, a washer pitching tournament, children's play area and more, according to organizers.

Silver Heels fire extinguished

A wildfire reported Sunday morning in the Silver Heels area torched an estimated 35 acres and destroyed a shed before firefighters were able to douse the flames, according to Howard County Volunteer Fire Department officials.
The fire was reported in the area between Driver Road and Chaparral Road at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to HCVFD Chief Tommy Sullivan.

Plan to visit the stars Saturday

Amateur astronomers and local residents will get a chance to turn their sights toward the heavens Saturday as officials with the Big Spring State Park prepare for their annual Stargazing Party atop the local landmark.
“Sunset is approximately 9 p.m. and there will be a program as soon as it gets dark enough to see the projection, which is usually between 9:20 and 9:30 p.m.,” said Park Manager Ron Alton. “I'm going to ask the astronomy club members to bone up on their constellations so we can point some of them out.”
