Scouts to collect tabs for Ronald McDonald House

The Lone Star District of the Buffalo Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America is working with the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge Aerie 3188 in Big Spring to collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Lubbock.
“The program is a way for people of all ages to support RMHC and make a difference for families and children,” said Brian Sweeney, Lone Star District executive.

Lawsuit charges Alon USA with negligence in 2008 explosion

Round two in the legal battle between Alon USA — owner of the Big Spring Refinery — and local residents claiming damages caused by the Feb. 18, 2008, explosion that rocked the Crossroads area to its core is expected to begin in 118th District Court with jury selection slated Monday morning.
The lawsuit — which names more than 150 plaintiffs — claims it was the negligence of Alon USA that caused the explosion, which occurred shortly after 8:20 a.m.

Port-to-Plains on table for county commissioners

An agreement between Howard County and West Texas Centers tops Monday’s agenda for county commissioners, as the court holds its regularly scheduled meeting.
Also part of the agenda, County Judge Mark Barr is expected to discuss renewal of the health and employee benefits pool, as well as meet with officials involved in the Ports-to-Plains project.

HC to slash $4 mil

The math is pretty simple — or simply depressing, depending on your point of view.
Howard College trustees will get their first look at a proposed budget for the coming fiscal year when they hold a workshop at 10 a.m. Monday in the Student Union Building’s Tumbleweed Room. The workshop will be followed by a trustee meeting scheduled for 12:30 a.m.
Because of significant cuts in state aid to the college this year, the budget promises to be beyond conservative, officials promise.
College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks listed the areas where Howard will lose significant chunks of state revenue:

Shots Fired

Big Spring police are investigating two shootings which took place Friday night, one of which landed a local man in jail.
Timothy Arview, 30, was arrested at his home in the 800 block of Creighton and charged with deadly conduct.
Officers had been called to the residence about 9:30 p.m. in reference to shots being fired. Upon arriving at the scene, officers recovered numerous shell casings.

courses host local tourneys

Comanche Trail Golf Course is hosting its City Golf Championship tournament July 30-31. The tournament will be open to any Howard County resident or current annual member of CTGC or Big Spring Country Club. The field will be divided into three divisions: Women’s, Men’s and Men’s Senior (55 or older).
Men must declare themselves eligible for the Championship Flight before play begins. Flights will be determined after Saturday’s (July 30) rounds are completed. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each flight.

Juan graduation Who's Who

Bryan R. Juan, son of Drs. Mel and Lorna Juan, received a bachelor of arts in chemistry and a bachelor of science in biological sciences, Magna Cum Laude and honors in liberal arts during the May 2011 SMU commencement ceremony. After the university-wide commencement, SMU's schools and departments held individual ceremonies throughout the day to honor graduates.
Bryan will continue his education and pursue his doctor of medicine degree at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock.

Hernandez birth

Karlie Lyn Hernandez, daughter of Alfredo and Yuly Hernandez of Big Spring, was born July 13, 2011, at 4:44 p.m.
She weighed 7 pounds and meausured 19 1/2 inches.
Maternal grandparents are Guadalupe and Julian Burciaga of Big Spring.
Her paternal grandparent is Lupe Rivas of Big Spring.

Green and Williams engagement

Carlita Lynette Green and Johnny Clifford Williams, both of Big Spring announce their engagement.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Carl and Sheriel Green and the granddaughter of the late Johnny and Charles Green, of Big Spring.
The groom-to-be is the son of Johnny Williams Sr. of San Angelo and the grandson of Kay Conner of Big Spring.
Both are graduates of Big Spring High School.
The couple plans to exchange wedding vows July 30, 2011 at Cornerstone Covenant Church at 4 p.m.

Ponce de Leon birth

Stefanie and Ivan Ponce de Leon of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico announce the birth of their son, Eli Maddex.
Eli was born June 24, 2011, at 11:25 a.m. in Lubbock. He weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and was 21 ÂĽ inches long.
His maternal grandparents are Tammy and Malcolm Pointon of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, formerly of Big Spring. His paternal grandparents are Jaime and Guadalupe Ponce de Leon.
He was welcomed home by Ethan, age 2 ½.
