Astronaut coming to Big Spring

May 2, 2011

NASA’s most experienced astronaut is visiting Big Spring Independent School District and the public is invited.

Dr. Story Musgrave, the only astronaut to serve on all of the shuttles, will visit with students and give a public presentation about his time on missions in outer space. The public presentation will be at 7 p.m. May 17 in the Big Spring High School auditorium. A question and answer session will follow.

State hospital security officer gets a new kidney

Terry Watkins will tell you straight up that it’s his fault he needed a new kidney.

He didn’t take care of his diabetes or his hypertension.

That oversight forced a kidney shutdown, requiring years of dialysis and a kidney transplant.

The Big Spring State Hospital security officer spent two years on the waiting list, always apprehensive, always waiting, always hopeful.
“Each time the phone rang, you were just on edge,” he said. “You were a little excited.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• MELISSA GUADALUPE GOMEZ, 27, of 1700 N. FM 700, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency and warrants for expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
• SEAN CHASE CRAWFORD, 24, of Midland, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for theft of service.
• DAVID ADAM MARTINEZ, 26, of 1002 N. Main St. (apartment number not provided), was arrested Saturday on a charge of failure to display driver's license.

G.W. "Bill" Birrell, 89, of Big Spring died Friday, April 29, 2011, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., May 2, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Sharon Wiese, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the funeral home.

Catherine Leubner of Big Spring and Kirby Dunn of Bowie announce their engagement.
Catherine is the daughter of John and Ruth Leubner of Big Spring and Kirby is the son of Chris and Karla Dunn of Bowie.
She is a 2009 graduate of Big Spring High School and is attending Wayland Baptist University.
The prospective groom is a 2006 graduate of Bowie High School and also attended Wayland Baptist University. He is employed at Harvest Christian Fellowship of Plainview.
The couple will exchange wedding vows on July 9, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Christina Hernandez Alcantar of Killeen and Guillermo Willie Alcantar of Sheppard AFB announce their engagement.
Christina is the daughter of Jose G. and Celia M. Hernandez of Killeen. She is the granddaughter of Jose G. and Juanita G. Hernandez and James L. and Celia R. Merritt, all of Eagle Pass.
Guillermo is the son of Richard Alcantar and Maria B. Alcantar of Big Spring. He is the grandson of of Ofelia Alcantar of Dallas and the late Perfecto and Rosa Baca and Guillermo Alcantar.
The bride-elect graduated Howard College with her associates of science degree.

Dee's Trade Show opens at Fair Barn

A little bit of shopping and a little bit of fun.

Dee's Trade Show is in its fifth year and still bringing unique items to Howard County. The show began Saturday at the Howard County Fair Barn and continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“This is a great time for everyone to come out and do their Mother's Day shopping,” show owner Denise McComb said.

McComb noted there are about 50 vendors this year selling items such as clothing, candles, interior decorations and much more.
“There are lots of unique gift ideas here,” McComb said. “There is something for everyone.”

14 alleged gang members arrested

More than a dozen arrests were made this week as part of an effort to seek out violent gang members with outstanding warrants and those involved in gang-related criminal activity, according to local law enforcement officials.

Part of ICE Surge 2011 and in support of Operation Community Shield, law enforcement officials with the Big Spring Police Department, Howard County Sheriff’s Office, Customs & Border Protection (Air/Marine) and Enforcement Removal Operations made 14 arrests between Tuesday and Thursday as a result of the investigation.
