Howard College cowgirl tops in barrel racing

Kaci Smith has finally found her rhythm and for the second week in a row brought home the first place prize in barrel racing this past weekend at the Western Texas College rodeo in Snyder.

Smith scorched times of 13.64 in the long round and a 13.80 in the short, which was enough for the first place finish in the average.
“Kaci is doing a great job,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College rodeo coach. “She just needs to keep going fast and we’ll see her at he national finals.”

Commissioners eye redistricting

Howard County commissioners will meet with an Austin attorney in a special meeting Wednesday to discuss redistricting within the county's four precincts, a process made necessary by the latest census results.

According to County Judge Mark Barr, the 2010 Census identified some areas within the county where the population has become unbalanced, an issue the court will be expected to resolve by shifting precinct lines.

George Throop decided that it was time to answer a calling, step out of the normal and do something different than his usual day-to-day life.

“I was manager of security of a high-rise building and it took care of my needs, but I wanted something more,” Throop said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• RILEY DON BROOKS, 21, of 1902 Mittle, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• STEPHEN KYLE GAY, 27, of 1409 Wood, was arrested Monday on charges of driving while intoxicated – second offense and driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• AVERY BROOKS, 17, of 1902 Mittle, was arrested Monday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.

Bobby Sumner, 62, of Big Spring died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Martin County Hospital. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2011, at Life Church with Pastor Clint Collins officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Garden City takes 10-1A golf titles

Golfers from Garden City and Sands overcame not only the course, but Mother Nature as well, at the District 10-1A tournament at Big Spring Country Club Monday.

Garden City won both the boys' and girls' team and individual titles, while Sands placed second in the boys' bracket. Those three squads advance to the Region II-1A tournament, scheduled for Shady Oaks Country Club in Baird April 18-19.

Paced by the trio of Hayden Halfmann, Brian Hirt and Austin Hoelscher, Garden City won the boys' division by 61 strokes over runner-up Sands.
