Police beat

April 18, 2011

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• BRENDA DAWN CHILDERS, 29, of 2403 Carlton, was arrested Saturday on charges of speeding and failure to appear.
• JAMEY SCOTT JOHNSON, 48, transient, was arrested Saturday on charges of pedestrian failing to yield the right of way to a vehicle and standing in roadway to solicit a ride.
• RAUL GONZALES, 59, of 1806 Owens, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for assault – family violence.

Sanchez - Clarke

April 18, 2011

Jennifer Sanchez of Big Spring, daughter of Mike and Josie Sanchez of Big Spring, and Michael Clarke of Baton Rouge, La., son of Steve and Betty Clarke of Baton Rouge, La. announce their engagement.

The bride elect is a 1999 Big Spring High School graduate and a 2003 Howard Junior College graduate. She is employed at Pediatric Dentistry of Arlington.

The prospective groom is a graduate of Trinity High School and is employed at Brandt Engineering.

The couple plans to exchange vows June 11, 2011 in Fort Worth.

Ferrell - Jenkins

April 18, 2011

Landon Paul Jenkins, son of Richard and Wendi Jenkins of Big Spring, and Amber Nicole Ferrell, daughter of Bennie and April Ferrell of San Antonio, are pleased to announce their engagement and plans to mary July 16, 2011, in San Antonio.

Landon is a 2004 graduate of Big Spring High School and received his bachelor’s degree in general business from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2008. He recently received his master’s degree in organizational human resource development from Abilene Christian University in February 2011.

Knox - Worstell

April 18, 2011

Hayley Jo Knox and Matthew Morris Worstell, both of Dallas, announce their engagement. They will exchange wedding vows at Playacar Palace in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Joann Knox of Abilene, formerly of Big Spring and the granddaughter of Dorothy Sullivan of Rankin and Billy Joe and Peggy Knox of Crockett. She is the great-granddaughter of Eloise Knox, also of Crockett.

Hayley is a 2000 graduate of Big Spring High School and a 2005 graduate of Texas Tech University.  She is an oral healthcare consultant for GlaxoSmithKline.

State hospital honors top volunteers

Steve Smith presented the women of Salem Baptist Church with the Jack Y. Smith Award Thursday during Big Spring State Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

The luncheon, “Touching Lives, Lifting Spirits,” recognized approximately 100 volunteers who have raised more than $1.5 million in the past 10 years for the patients at Big Spring State Hospital through fundraisers, soliciting donations and operating The Chalet Resale Shoppe.

Candidates speak out during debate

Despite drawing only three candidates, Thursday night's debate for city council hopefuls managed to heat up the races for the District 1 and District 3 seats on the government panel, with attention turning to term limits, the tax rate and municipal spending.

District 3 candidates Shannon Thomason and Glen Carrigan — along with a last minute-statement from write-in candidate Oscar Velasco — joined District 1 hopeful Marcus Fernandez to take part in the debate, which was fueled by questions submitted by e-mail and mail.

Tea Party rally Saturday

April 15, 2011

Howard County Conservatives will host a Tea Party rally from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Heart of the City Park.

The event is informal. Those attending may want to bring refreshments and lawn chairs.

“This is an opportunity for all citizens to become better informed on the critical issues facing our country and what they can do to make a difference,” said Bo Fryar, event organizer.

Special guests will be State Rep. Jim Landtroop and Dr. Donald May. Local conservative candidates will also be present at the rally, according to Fryar.

Allen William Gerhart, 80, of Odessa passed away April 13, 2011, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel.

Travis N. Rushing, 71, of Big Spring died Friday, April 15, 2011, in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Big Spring has disaster response plan

Hurricanes and tsunamis may not be on the list of disasters likely to occur in West Texas, but it doesn't mean there are no emergency situations or damaging factors.

Big Spring, as small and secluded as it is, has an emergency plan set in place — almost 900 pages of preparation and procedure, to be exact.

According to Big Spring Police Department Lt. Terry Chamness, emergency management coordinator, the state provides guidelines and each county sets up its own emergency response plans.
