Council to meet on ordinance, aquatics center

The Big Spring City Council will entertain a number of amendments to its Code of Ordinances Tuesday, including a change to its Business and Occupations section to help prevent the sale of stolen goods to secondhand stores.

According to Big Spring Police Chief Lonnie Smith, the amendment would provide a number of processes designed to prevent the sale of stolen goods and promote the recovery of such items.

Two BSHS students bring home gold

All Big Spring High School Speech and Debate coach Jennifer Adams wanted for her birthday was for one of her students to win a University Interscholastic League academic state gold medal. Turns out, her birthday was twice as nice.

Big Spring High School students Jessica Rubio placed first in Persuasive Speaking and Shermila Kher placed first in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the 101st Annual UIL State Tournament.

“We felt we had a really good shot at winning at least one gold medal,” Adams said. “These two girls have been performing well all year.”

Funfastic Fourth is back

Funtastic Fourth, Big Spring's downtown festival celebrating God and the nation's independence, is back, albeit with some “new” twists.

“We have a new, energized board, new excitement and a new format this year,” said Allan Johnson, president of the Downtown Revitalization Association, which puts on the daylong celebration.
There's another new aspect to Funtastic Fourth. This year, the date will change.

Weekend Police Beat

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• VALERIE MIRAMONTES GARCIA, 26, of 807 N. Scurry St., was arrested Friday on a warrant for harassment.
• COREY ERIK RAMEY, 23, of 3304 W. Hwy 80 30, was arrested Friday on charge of purchase/furnish alcohol for a minor.
• ROBERT ANTHONY GRIEGO, 21, of 807 N. Scurry St., was arrested Friday on a warrant for fail to appear.
• RUBY MUNOZ, 41, of 1429 E. Sixth 32, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.

Big Spring happy to go to the dogs

It's all about the dogs at this show.

The Big Spring Kennel Club Dog Show is at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum through Sunday. The show starts at 9 a.m., breaks for lunch and picks back up at 12:45 p.m. with group judging.

Dog owners and breeders have gathered in Big Spring for the 41st annual dog show. There were 280 dogs from Texas, 31 from New Mexico, 10 from Oklahoma and countless others from as far away as Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington.

Relay effort raises $170,000 so far

Strong wind and the threat of rain didn't deter swashbuckling Relay For Life participants at Blankenship Field Friday and Saturday, who learned their efforts raised more than $170,000 in the fight against cancer.

The unofficial total was announced after the final lap Saturday at $172,073.15, with money from the silent auction, basket auction and underwriters still coming in. The final amount will be made public June 2 at First United Methodist Church's Garrett Hall, when the Howard/Glasscock ACS will have its community wrap up event.

Rangers get go-ahead to investigate mayor

An investigation into the alleged acceptance of illegal campaign contributions will go forward, the district attorney has confirmed, while the official in question — Mayor Tommy Duncan — said he will accept responsibility for making a mistake.

“I met with the Texas Rangers and requested they investigate this matter throughly as to the mayor and the corporations,” District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson said during a press conference Friday afternoon at the Howard County Courthouse.

Cory Baker, a 714th Training Squadron military training leader, for his selection as the Combat Airlifter of the Week. Sergeant Baker has mentored more than 220 non-prior enlisted aviators and enforces strict Air Force standards and discipline. Baker is the son of Connie and Jessie Baker of Big Spring and was born and raised in Howard County.

Melton and Tinkler Engagement

Tommy and Laurie Melton of Odessa want to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristina Melton of Odessa to W.E. Tinkler of Midland.
The bride-elect is a 2003 graduate of Permian High School and a 2005 graduate of South Plains College and 2007 graduate of University of Texas in Arlington. She is employed as a fifth grade teacher at Goliad Elementary in Big Spring.
She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clois Snell of Coahoma.

Haney-Davis Engagement

Jay and Mona Davis of De Soto are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Erin Michelle to Paul Robert Haney of Dallas.Paul is the son of Robert and Suzanne Haney of Big Spring. The couple will exchange wedding vows June 6, 2011, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Erin is a 2000 graduate of Texas Christian Academy and is a candidate for spring graduation at the University of Texas at Arlington. She will receive a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology May 13. She is currently student teaching in Arlington ISD.
