Blake and Cynthia R. Stinson of Winona, Minn., formerly of Big Spring, are pleased to announce the engagement of their son, Brent, to Alyssa Halvorson of Stewartville, Minn, on July 9, 2011.

Alyssa is the daughter of Dan and Marlene Halvorson of Red Wing, Minn.
Brent is an elementary teacher and a coach in Spring Valley, Minn. Alyssa is a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Brent is the grandson of Angela D. Rodriguez of Big Spring and the late Antonio R. Rodriguez, Sr.

The couple will exchange wedding vows in Red Wing, Minn.

26 indicted by grand jury

A former Howard County employee accused of tampering with government records was among 27 people indicted during this week's session of the county grand jury.

Jamie R. Weaver, 35, of Forsan, stands charged of two counts of tampering with a governmental record and two counts of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Forsan ISD faces price hikes

FORSAN — Increases in salaries, health insurance and cafeteria costs will be the focus of Forsan Independent School District trustees when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

FISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said the district has received notification that employee health insurance costs will increase in the coming school year.

College eyes low-performing programs

In tough economic times, college programs must be more than educational — they also have to be efficient. After all, what good is a class if no one takes it?

Howard College trustees will receive a report on three low-performing programs when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

County likely to renew public defender agreement

Capital murder cases can end up costing county governments a significant amount of money, so Howard County commissioners have purchased an insurance policy of sorts to help keep those costs down in the future.

When they convene at 10 a.m. Monday, commissioners are expected to renew an agreement with Lubbock County which provides public defenders for capital murder defendants.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• PAUL LEE BERRINGER, 40, of 4053 Vicky St., was arrested Friday on charge of driving while intoxicated/MB.
• LEE TORRES ESCOBAR, 32, of 811 E. 16th St., was arrested Friday on two warrants from other agencies.
• GARY DEAN WATKINS, 39, of 1744 Purdue, was arrested Friday on charge of burglary of habitation and intend to other felony.

Laura Louise (Beene) Odom, 46, passed away due to a sudden illness on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Abilene Regional Hospital. Funeral services were to be held Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 2 p.m. at FMC in Brownwood with Dr. Don Scroggs officiating. Burial will be at Eastlawn Memorial Cemetery in Brownwood. Davis Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood is in charge of services.

Saundra Heffington Webb, 60, of Odessa, formerly of Big Spring died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Henry, Cornerstone Assembly of God in Atlanta, Texas, officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Mary Fowler, 93, of Big Spring died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel, with the Rev. Herb McPherson, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Memorial Park.
