Triathlon set Saturday at Comanche Trail Park

There is still time to register for the seventh annual Comanche Warrior Triathlon, set for Saturday at Comanche Trail Lake.

The event, which will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, consists of a 500-meter swim, an 18-mile bicycle ride and a 3-mile run, event organizer Hayley Lewis said.

City, county to host public hearings

There will be a whole lotta public hearings going on over the coming days.

Forced by a software glitch to reshuffle their tax rate and budget adoption schedules, the city of Big Spring and Howard County will hold several public hearings to give area residents a chance to provide their input.

Erlinda Flores, 86, of Big Spring, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
Erlinda was born March 10, 1928, in Chichimequilla, Zacatecas.

She was a devoted Catholic and loved gardening and raising her children and grandchildren.

Beverly Strickland

Beverly Strickland, 64, of Stanton, Texas died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, in a Midland hospital. Graveside services was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Beverly was born Oct. 29, 1949, in Odessa and married Danny Strickland, May 8, 1969, in Midland. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her husband, Danny Strickland; one son, Donny Strickland and wife, Vicki; one daughter, Loree Strickland; and four grandchildren.

Collins become first Hawk to homer in Majors

Tyler Collins continues to make Howard College baseball history ... even three seasons after he earned the National Junior College Player of the Year honors and headed off to professional baseball.
Collins became the first Howard College product to homer in the Major Leagues on Monday afternoon by launching a three-run pinch-hit blast in the Detroit Tigers’ 12-1 rout of the Cleveland.

Big Spring rallies for 58-56 victory over Kerrvile Tivy

SAN ANGELO – The Big Spring High School Steers made sure the large crowd on hand at San Angelo Stadium got their money’s worth on Saturday evening.
And then some.
Matt Yanez, on the final play of the Steers’ season opener, outleaped a crowd of defenders in the end and snagged a 41-yard “Hail Mary” pass from Tobyn Tannehill and then alertly pitched the ball to teammate Hunter Hill, who finished off a wild come-from-behind victory over Kerrville Tivy by cradling the game-winning touchdown while falling to the ground.
