The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• FRANK FIERRO JR., 63, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL WAYNE GOMEZ JR., 17, of 2703 Carol, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• NATIVIDAD ZAMORA CEBALLOS, 32, of 2617 Fairchild, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.

Thomas 'Tommy' Weaver

Thomas (Tommy) Weaver, 85, of Big Spring went to his final home in heaven Friday, March 4, 2011. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene with the Rev. Craig Wascom, of First Assembly of God Church, officiating.

Stormee Kay Nix

Stormee Kay Nix, 31, of Big Spring died March 5, 2011, from a car accident. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Alan Wallace, pastor of Peoples Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, Lubbock, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Opal Evelyn Mealer

Ms. Opal Evelyn Mealer, 90, of Big Spring passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, in Big Spring. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. R.T. Havener, retired Assembly of God minister, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Maurice "Mo" Bennett, 70, of Big Spring died Monday March 7, 2011, in Midland. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

CASA in need of volunteers

It's all for the best interest of the child.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is gearing up to train more volunteers. Training for the Howard County area will begin April 11 and continue through April 21.

“Ideally, we would like to bring on at least 10 new Howard County volunteers,” Robin Reece, volunteer coordinator, said.

Routine agenda for city council

Tuesday's meeting of the Big Spring City Council features a rather routine agenda, as the government panel looks to give final approval to a resolution supporting House Joint Resolution 56, a bill currently being considered by the Texas Legislature that would outlaw certain mandates in the Lone Star State.

During its Feb. 22 meeting, the council approved first reading of the resolution, which calls for a constitutional amendment prohibiting unfunded and under‐funded mandates passed down from the state level to city and county governments.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• DANIEL MONTEZ VIERA SR., 23, of 1907 S. Main St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JUAN ARNULFO CARDONA, 25, of 109 Algerita, was arrested Saturday on charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, driving while intoxicated – open container, no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear (three counts).
• AMANDA RENEE MCGREGOR, 22, of Lamesa, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Boden of Andrews and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Lester of Big Spring would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Lester, of Big Spring, to Hank Squiers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Squiers, of Eastland.

Hannah was part of the 2006 Sands High School graduating class and earned her bachelor of arts in psychology from McMurry University in 2009. She is currently employed by the Noah Project of Abilene as community education coordinator.

Emilee Nicole Gonzales

Eddie Gonzales and Mildred Sandridge want to announce the birth of their daughter Emilee Nicole Gonzales.

Emilee was born Feb. 21, 2011 at 8:12 a.m. She weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 19 ¾ inches long.

Her maternal grandparents are Brenda and Stan Stangel and paternal grandparents are Eddie and Lori Gonzales.
