Steers make easy work of Sweetwater, bad shooting night helps Sweetwater girls bury Lady Steers

January 19, 2011

Big Spring boys
More than anything, the first quarter of the Big Spring-Sweetwater game Tuesday in Steer Gym was an exhibition of athleticism on the Steers’ part.

There was that uptempo style they like to run and a couple of missed dunks that had fans buzzing.

But forward Mike Menefield gave the fans what they wanted on a fast break with a two-handed jam that gave the Steers a 13-7 lead.
By then the Steers were well on their way to the 75-46 drubbing of the Mustangs in District 5-3A play.

Area basketball: Forsan boys win, but Lady Buffs stumble at Roosevelt

Coahoma boys
COAHOMA — Coahoma head coach Kim Nichols continues to stress putting four quarters together as the Bulldogs dropped a District 3-2A contest to Denver City at home.
Tanner Ruiz’s 16 points weren’t enough to keep the Bulldogs around in this game. The Bulldogs cut a deficit to seven twice late in the game, but Denver City was just too much.
Things haven’t exactly gone the Bulldogs’ way so far in district play with injuries, among other things, ailing the team, but Nichols said his group is still positive about halfway through district play.

Carlos Emory was huge with 22 points and seven rebounds. He rarely missed, too, shooting 14 of 18 from the field. Shavon Coleman also had 22 points and Corey Stern chipped in 13 points.

Film Society hits the airwaves

For many, movie soundtracks are hidden deftly in the background of films, a presence that is often forgotten in the midst of a summer blockbuster or a tearful reunion between silver screen characters.

For others, however, the soundtracks stand on their own, at the very least conveying the emotions and memories of films through theme songs.

Who could forget the Imperial March from the Star Wars saga, or the upbeat theme from the Indiana Jones series?

Heavy hearts: Volunteers keep searching for Hailey Dunn

January 18, 2011

Searchers from Big Spring, Coahoma and other Howard County communities turned their attention Monday morning to northern Highway 350 in the search for 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn, as the girl's recent disappearance continues to weigh heavy on the minds of most West Texans.

Heather Maddox of Big Spring and DeNeise Coates of Coahoma — joined by other area volunteers — traveled the road between Ira and Big Spring Monday, according to Maddox.
