A special surprise

A couple of Big Spring natives reunited in a special way recently, and — thanks to reality television — the whole nation can share the moment.
U.S. Army Sgt. Garrett Huitt, his wife April and their children Aaric and Kendall will be featured in the TLC broadcast of “Surprise Homecoming” Monday night at 9 p.m. Central Time.
The series, which is hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus, features surprise military homecomings. The hour-long show features three such “reunions,” including the Huwitt family homecoming that took place March 15.

Bretz birth announcement

Brody Manddler Bretz was born May 10, 2011, at 9:48 p.m. to Timothy and Laura Brets of Big Spring. He weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 20 Âľ inches long.
His maternal grandparents are Carol Snelgrave of Arlington, Kans., and Rocky Varioles of Oskaloosa, Iowa. His paternal grandparents are Charisse and Doug Everett of Anadarko, Okla., and the late Billy Bretz.
He was welcomed home by his big brother, Gage Bretz.

Court of Honor Ceremony

David Michael Sikes, 18, of Coahoma will be formally installed as an Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Big Spring.
Sikes, who has been a scout for the past six years, is the son of David and Kay Sikes of Coahoma.

Stewart birth announcement

Kelly Wingert and John Stewart announce the birth of their son, Gauge Austin Wayne Stewart. He was born May 1, 2011, and weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces. He was 18 ½ inches long.
His grandparents are Chris and Karen Wingert of Big Spring and Debra and David Stewart of Seguin. His great-grandparents are Cad and Anne Wingert of Big Spring and Charles and Linda Towne of Houston.
Gauge was welcomed home by his big brother, Walker.

Olague and McGruder engagement

Mariah Kay Olague and Alton Lamonte McGruder, both of Big Spring, will exchange wedding vows June 11, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Bethal Baptist Church.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Tom and Debra Olague of Big Spring and the granddaughter of Maria Florez, the late Fermin Florez Sr. and Elvira Olague and the late Tomas Olague Sr., all of Big Spring.
She is a Big Spring High School graduate.
The groom-to-be is the son of Beverly Easley and the grandson of Dorthy Wooden and James Jasper McGruder Wooden, both of Big Spring.
He is a Big Spring High School graduate.

Matthews-Wheeler wedding announcement

Rory Kristen Matthews and Asa James Wheeler, both of Big Spring, exchanged wedding vows April 30, 2011, at College Baptist Church.
Rory is the daughter of Gordon and Kathy Daniels of Big Spring and the late Kenneth Matthews. She is the granddaughter of Lyndon and Joyce Priest, JoNell Daniels and Charles and Jewell Matthews, all of Big Spring.
She is attending Howard College and works at Anthony Hunt Library.
The groom is the son of Jennifer Walker of Kennadale and the grandson of Duncan and Mary Wheeler of San Antonio. He is attending Howard College and works at Sears.

Buchanan anniversary

Sammie and Connie Ford Buchanan of Big Spring will celebrate their 50th anniversary June 1, 2011.
The couple married in Coahoma and had two children, Sammie Don Buchanan Jr. and wife, Paris, of Austin; and Vickie Buchanan Engel and husband, Todd, of San Angelo. They have three grandchildren, Rae Dawn Buchanan of San Antonio; Amy Catherine Engel, who is attending Texas Tech in Lubbock and Alyson Renae Engel of San Angelo.

Construction begins at elementary campuses

A different kind of school work is beginning at Big Spring Independent School District.

While students and teachers prepare for summer vacation, construction work on four new elementary campuses is beginning in earnest.

Crews have begun preparing the sites for three of the four new schools in recent days, and the pace of work will only increase in the coming weeks, BSISD officials said.
