April 11, 2011

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• KRYSTAL DYANNE HERRERA, 24, of 406 N. Fifth St. in Coahoma, was arrested Saturday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• WILLIAM SCOTT SIMPSON, 48, of 1300 Stanford, was arrested Saturday on warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to appear.
• DANIEL VERA FLORES, 42, of 907 E. 15th St., was arrested Saturday on a warrant for assault by threat.

Trustees renew teacher contracts

Big Spring Independent School District is finding other ways to make budget cuts without going to the employee chopping block.

Thursday, BSISD trustees approved contracts through the 2011-2012 for all professional employees.

“A lot of hard work went into making this possible,” Superintendent Steven Saldivar said following the meeting, which lasted only about a half-hour.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARK WILLIAM EDWARDS, 53, of 806 E. 16th St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• TONY DELAGARZA, 46, of 11002 E. 16th St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MATTHEW ELISEO DELAGARZA, 19, of 1608 Young, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for speeding in a school zone.
• VERONICA MARIE ORTIZ, 28, of 800 W. Marcy Apt. 10, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for no safety belt.

Voter registration deadline nears

Time is running out for Big Spring residents to register to vote in the May 14 municipal election, as the April 14 deadline is less than a week away.

With early voting set to begin May 2 and run through May 10, Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom said she and her team of election judges are gearing up for the political contests.

Rosendo 'Toto' Robles

Rosendo "Toto" Robles, 59, of Big Spring died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at a friend's residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

J.C. Woodard, 67, of Big Spring died Friday, April 8, 2011, at his residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Charles William 'C.W.' Brumley

April 8, 2011

Charles William "C.W." Brumley, 85, of Colorado City died Friday, April 8, 2011, in a local nursing home. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Brush fires roar through Crossroads

April 7, 2011

Howard County volunteer firefighters had their hands full Wednesday, as a pair of wildfires threatened vast amounts of the Crossroads area.

The first fire, reported at approximately 12:50 p.m. near Glasscock County on Highway 821, destroyed more than 350 acres, according to Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan.

Commissioners begin redrawing county lines

Howard County commissioners began the arduous task of resetting precinct lines Wednesday morning in an effort to address disparities in the county's population identified in the 2010 Census.

Commissioners — with Precinct 1 Commissioners Emma Brown and Precinct 3 Commissioner Jimmie Long absent — met with Austin attorney Bob Bass, a partner with Allison Bass & Associates, to go over the changes in the population through the county's four precincts and look at possible ways to correct the issues.

Police association plans poker run

It's time to hit the road and make a poker run.

The Big Spring Police Association is gearing up for its first Santa's Spring Fling Poker Run and Craft Show. The poker run will take place in conjunction with Dee's Trade Show.

Registration will take place the day of the run, April 30 at 9 a.m. Registration will be at the Howard County Fair Barn and is $20 per bike and $10 per passenger.
