Dunn case: Memphis lead invalid

COLORADO CITY — Investigators working on the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn confirmed an recent out-of-state lead in the case was invalid, as the search for the girl continues into its fourth week.

According to Pete Kampfer, city manager and media liaison for the search, investigators were looking into a possible lead in the case in Memphis, Tenn. However, Kampfer confirmed this week the lead was determined to be invalid.

Donald Gene “Don” Nash, 60, of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Don Snipes officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

No. 9 Sands boys stun No. 10 Grady

LENORAH — Grady did its best to deliver the knockout punch to Sands in a matchup of two top 10 teams.

It was the Mustangs, however, who delivered the final blow.
In a wild back and forth contest, No. 9 Sands upended No. 10 Grady 48-47 Tuesday at Wildcat Gym in Lenorah in District 8A, Division II action.

Both teams are playoff bound, but the win gives Sands the easier path to the district championship, especially since the Mustangs beat Grady at home earlier this season.

Area basketball: BSHS girls pick up win

MONAHANS — Cerbi Ritchey’s 20 points powered the Big Spring Lady Steers past Monahans 55-43 in non-district action.
Throughout District 5-3A play, the Lady Steers had been in a shooting slump, but with the win over Snyder Friday and Monday’s win over Monahans, Big Spring seems headed in the right direction with Abilene Wylie on tap at home.
Diamond Mayes chipped in 10 points while Mackenzie Stone hit two 3-pointers. The gave Big Spring its 17th of the season.

Coahoma, Forsan split games in second meeting

COAHOMA — Forsan was out to get a sweep of Coahoma Tuesday night, but the Bulldogs denied that bid.
Coahoma edged Forsan 64-63 at home Tuesday for their third win in District 3-2A play.
Both teams weren’t short of scoring. For Coahoma, Sheigh Cravens had 19 points and Tanner Ruiz had 18. The Buffaloes hit 12 3-pointers in Tuesday’s game, with Patrick Robles’ four being the most. The only quarter that didn’t have both teams score in double digits was the first, when Coahoma had 16, but Forsan had nine.

Colleges get new life under state Senate budget bill

Four Texas community colleges facing closure will escape the axe under a preliminary Texas budget submitted by state senators Monday.

The four institutions, which include Odessa College, would have had their state funding eliminated under the House version of the budget, which was released last week. Under the Senate version, however, funding has been restored.
