Sibyl N. North, 88, of Stanton died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Stanton with the Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Sheriff's office to round up toys for Crossroads youth

Deputies and dispatchers with the Howard County Sheriff's Office will be doing their part to brighten the holiday season for children in the Crossroads area, as they kick off a toy drive to benefit the local Salvation Army's Angel Tree.

Jessica Olivas, a dispatcher with the HCSO, said she and fellow dispatcher Jennifer Bakley came up with the idea to do the toy drive to not only help needy children, but to try to erase a nasty stereotype within the community.

Arson suspected in DQ fire

Officials with the Big Spring Fire Department say the fire reported at the Fourth Street Dairy Queen late Tuesday night was set to cover up a burglary at the local restaurant.

Big Spring Fire Marshall Carl Condray said the fire, which was reported just after 11 p.m., has been ruled arson, an apparent attempt by the thief to cover his or her tracks.

The library closed at 3 p.m. today for the Thanksgiving holidays. We will re-open Monday at 10 a.m. Remember that you can drop off DVDs and CD (books, too) at the book drop located at the entrance. This is also the last column until we start purchasing new materials. Look for my return in late January!

Salvation Army ready for community feast

Crossroads residents looking to fill their Thanksgiving quotas of turkey and dressing won't have to wait long, as the Big Spring Salvation Army hosts its annual holiday meal Thursday.

While prep work for the meal actually began Tuesday — with the breadth of the work expected to be completed this afternoon — the dinner won't be ready until Thursday morning, according to Salvation Army Capt. Terri Cheshire, when Salvation Army staff and a slew of volunteers lay out the turkey and trimmings.

Holidays prompt many closures

Most municipal and school operations will shut down for the Thanksgiving weekend, officials announced.

Except for emergency services, City of Big Spring offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. This includes trash collection and landfill operations. Offices will resume normal operations Monday.

The same holds true for Howard County offices, which will close at 3 p.m. today and remain closed through the weekend. These include the library and senior center. Emergency services will remain open, officials said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• EDWARD JOSEPH BATEMAN, 20, of 2513 Chanute, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for failure to appear (four counts), speeding, expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• ERICKA KRYSTLE GONZALEZ, 20, of 1605 Kentucky Way, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 600 block of W. Interstate Highway 20.
In the 1900 block of E. FM 700.
