The Christmas season in Big Spring will start with a bang this weekend.
The Big Spring VA Medical Center will kick-start a weekend full of Christmas activities when it holds its 18th annual âLighting of the Lightsâ ceremony Friday. The event, which will conclude with the lighting of thousands of lights decorating the hospital, will begin at 6 p.m.
Because of ongoing construction in the main lobby, the event will be moved to the hospital's out-patient lobby.
When local coordinators with the annual Operation Christmas Child program set a goal to gather 775 goody-filled shoe boxes for children all over the globe, they hoped they would eclipse the number.
What they didn't plan on, however, was being able to overshoot the goal by nearly 250 shoe boxes, making this year's effort one of the most prolific in the program's local history.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
â¢ JUAN JOSE OLIVAREZ, 27, of 1302 Wright, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction, no driver's license â when unlicensed and failure to appear.
â¢ STEPHANIE ELAINE BAKER, 30, of 1601 Cardinal, was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from other agencies.
â¢ MARCUS JOE ANDERSON, 29, of 1015 Ridgeroad, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
Ross Beck, 47, of Berwyn Heights, Md., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, at a Burtonsville, Md., nursing home after a brief illness with cancer. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring.
Weldon D. Peeples, 78, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, in a local hospital. In honor of Weldon's request, there will be no memorial service for him.
Festus McElreath, age 78, of Big Spiring, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Services are pending with Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.

The Big Spring Police Department is investigating a pair of stabbing incidents that occurred during the holiday weekend, sending two Big Spring men to the emergency room.
Billy Joe Mitchell, 72, of Big Spring was arrested shortly after police dispatchers were notified of an assault Friday night at the Northcrest Apartments, located at 1002 N. Main St. on the city's north side.
Everett said the second stabbing was reported Sunday in the 600 block of Caylor.
John Carroll Rutherford, 23, of 710 Douglas, was arrested Sunday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
What do you get when you mix Santa Claus with the good ol' red, white and blue? This year's Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade.
The parade, which âheraldsâ the start of the Christmas season in this area, will celebrate its 25th anniversary next Saturday.
The theme for the this year is âA Star Spangled Christmas,â and several floats adorned with patriotic themes are expected, organizers said.
