Lois Stewart, 92, of Lubbock, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday June 13, 2014, in Lubbock. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Old Settlers Reunion to take less formal approach this year

The emphasis will be more on the “reunion” part of the annual Howard-Glasscock Old Settlers’ Reunion this year.

A less formal, more low-key reunion will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Heritage Museum.

Critical blood drive slated 10 to 2 Friday

According to representatives with the United Blood Services (UBS), the O-Negative blood supply for the area is at a dangerously low level.

The city of Big Spring will be hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, in Council Chambers 307 E. Fourth. Call Stacie King at 264-2347 to schedule an appointment.

J. C. 'Jake' Newell

J. C. "Jake" Newell, 79, of Garden City, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, in a Midland hospital. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the Garden City Cemetery with the Revs. Herb McPherson and Danny Whitehead officiating.

He was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Greenville, Texas and married Doralee Schafer May 22, 1953, in Garden City, Texas. She preceded him in death May 24, 2011.

Kristie Havlak

June 17, 2014

Kristie Havlak, 37, of Godley, passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at a Fort Worth hospital. Service were 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, at St. Ann Catholic Church of Burleson. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Mountain Valley Funeral Home. Burial was at Godley Cemetery.

Kristie was born Nov. 24, 1976, in San Angelo, to B.J. and Lillie (Lacey) Havlak. She was an elementary school teacher for Godley ISD and a graduate of Tarleton State University. She especially enjoyed family time with her niece and nephews, working with animals, attending sporting events, decorating and cooking.

Stephen Kyle Sledge

June 17, 2014

Stephen Kyle Sledge passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014. Stephen was born in Big Spring, Texas on Dec. 30, 1957. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii, where he met his wife, Sarah. They moved to Anchorage Alaska, where they had two children, Ryan and Kyle. In 1985, the family moved to their current residence in California.

City offers education incentive to workers

The city of Big Spring is willing to give a helping hand to employees looking to further their education.

Recently, the city council gave its blessing to a plan in which employees wishing to take college course pertinent to their careers are eligible to receive financial help in the form of reimbursements and cash advances from the city.

J. C. "Jake" Newell, 79, of Garden City, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 in a Midland hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Garden City Cemetery with the Rev. Herb McPherson, officiating.

He was born Aug. 11, 1934 in Greenville, Texas and married Doralee Schafer May 22, 1953 in Garden City, Texas. She preceded him in death May 24, 2011.

He came to Garden City in 1950 and worked as a field operator for Phillips Oil Company for 40 years.

Flag Day

Saturday, June 14, is a special day for Americans. Flag Day — the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 — was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916. This Betsy Ross flag above, now on loan and on display to the Heritage Museum, was crafted in 1970 by local resident Mamie Lee Dodds. It is completely hand sewn.
