This week's recipe comes from the oh-I-haven't-had-a-chance-to-get-to-the-store section. I was pantry searching and revving up that thing called a thinking cap, which wore me out. I had no meat thawed out and takeout budget was empty, so after surveying the damage and lack of choices I discovered a twist on an old dish.
The morning of Jan. 3 promised a return to some sort of normalcy. The holidays were now a pleasant memory. Awakening to the sunlight hitting our east windows was a reminder of a new day for 2005.

On call during the first weekend of December, the officer had gone to pick up a large hawk during the afternoon. After securing the raptor in his truck, he drove back to the shelter. The opportunity to handle such a bird reminded him of his days at the San Antonio zoo and other facilities.
After notifying the game warden, the officer was given our number to call. Since Odessa’s animal control was officially closed, we arranged to meet on Sunday morning.
