If you are interested in World War II’s Pacific campaign, then check out “Neptune’s Inferno” (AUCD 940.542 HOR J) by James D. Hornfischer. It is the story of America’s first concerted offensive against the Imperial Japanese juggernaut and the true turning point of WWII in the Pacific. Another neat AUCD is “American Rose” (AUCD B LEE G) by Karen Abbott. It is the phenomenal story of Gypsy Rose Lee and her career in vaudeville. I have read a review of the print version and it really sounds good. I did not know that actress June Havoc was Gypsy’s younger sister.

Soon he slowed and drove down into a wash area. As he came out of the dry streambed, the dust that had overcome his truck started to settle on the road ahead. As he waited for it to clear, he noticed a large grayish bird standing near an old mesquite.

Soaring in the emptiness of a winter sky, it had been seen for weeks. Spotted atop a weathered telephone pole, the large bird had been watched by a game warden as it searched the ground for any movement. Having seen it lift its prey as it flew away one afternoon, the officer was grateful to have shared a brief moment with such a magnificent being.
“Robert Lee,” said the male voice when I asked again for a location through the static of his call. “Who?” I asked. “Not who, but where,” he jokingly replied.
